NCNG soldiers headed to Romania for European exercise  The Fayetteville Observer 

The North Carolina National Guard is sending 200 soldiers to Europe to participate in a 22-nation training exercise meant to build readiness between allies in the face of Russian aggression in the region. The soldiers, from the Louisburg-based 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment, will be located near Circu, Romania, during the exercise, known as Saber Guardian 17. Read More…

Families welcome home NC Air National Guard members from deployment  WSOC-TV 

Thirty members of the 145th Airlift Wing returned home recently after being deployed to southwest Asia. There was a welcome home ceremony for the service members at the North Carolina Air National Guard base in west Charlotte. Robeson County woman crowned Miss North Carolina  WRAL-TV 

A new Miss North Carolina was crowned in downtown Raleigh. Victoria Huggins, Miss Greater Sampson County, took center stage at the Duke Energy Center with a bouquet of flowers and the celebratory crown. Huggins, who devotes much of her time to supporting the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the Alzheimer’s Association, said she has a “servant’s heart” and that she is the daughter of a military man who served for more than 39 years in the North Carolina National Guard. A Fort Bragg Fourth: Some like it hot, everyone likes it dry  The Fayetteville Observer 

Considering the deluge that swamped Fort Bragg’s Fourth of July celebration last year, you couldn’t blame people for taking an occasional peek toward the sky Tuesday. This year, though, the only thing coming down was the U.S. Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights. A state of military un-readiness: How budget caps threaten national security  Defense News 

Recently, a Russian fighter jet buzzed a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft participating in NATO exercises in the Baltic Sea. The armed fighter came within a few feet of the U.S. aircraft before breaking off, according to media reports. Closer to home, Russian bombers have repeatedly approached U.S. airspace off the coast of Alaska, prompting the Air Force to scramble F-22 Raptor fighter jets from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage to intercept them. Congress’ defense budget plans point to an uncertain military buildup  Military Times 

House and Senate lawmakers advanced a flurry of defense funding legislation recently, but are still far away from an actual military budget. That’s because of a host of unresolved issues in the bills, including how to get a divided Congress to settle on how much should be spent on national defense. Late June is typically the target date for Capitol Hill military funding moves, but the progress in recent days comes despite a months-late start in the normal budgeting process. Read More…
