More than 300 North Carolina National Guard troops came home to Albert J. Ellis Airport in Onslow County. The troops are part of the 1st Battalion of the 120th Regiment of the North Carolina National Guard. According to their spokesperson Lt. Col. Matt Devivo, the troops served a one-year deployment in the Middle East. They were part of Operation Spartan Shield. Read More…

An effort to mend fences between the Army and the National Guard could lead to a radical redesign of both, a retired general heading a congressionally-appointed panel on the future of the service said. Gen. Carter Ham brought members of the National Commission of the Future of the Army to Colorado Springs, Colorado on a fact-finding tour recently as part of the group’s charter to recommend ways to restructure the Army, Army Reserve and Army Guard. The commission was formed after a protracted battle over resources between the Guard and the Army became a public fight before House and Senate committees earlier this year. Read More…

On Sept. 11, 2001, in New York City, New York; Arlington, Virginia; and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Arab terrorists fly highjacked airliners into both towers of the World Trade Center in NYC and the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. Within minutes of the first report of a hijacking out of Boston, just six minutes after the scramble order was issued, the first F-15’s from the 102nd Fighter Wing, Massachusetts Air Guard, are airborne. Though in fast pursuit they arrived too late to intercept and prevent either of the planes from striking the Trade Center towers. Read More…

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Tuesday the United States should retain at least the current number of troops in Afghanistan indefinitely to counter a terrorism threat that is unlikely to die out even with the defeat of the Taliban or Islamic State. Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, said the country will remain a magnet for terrorist groups due to its history, lawless areas and opium trade, and he called for a freeze on any further military withdrawals under an Obama administration plan to whittle the 9,800 troops there to an embassy security force after 2016. North Carolina National Guard small arms repair specialists from the 626th Maintenance Company, 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 113th Sustainment Brigade provided armament support to the United States Military Academy from Aug. 17-30. The team of five, led by Chief Warrant Officer 2 Rhonda Krise preforms service checks, annual inspections and technical gauging on M4 rifles used by cadets at the academy for field training and weapons qualification. Sapper Stakes is a three-day competition challenging combat engineers through various physical and mentally events focusing on mobility, counter-mobility and survivability. Last year, the inaugural event was exclusively an Army Reserve competition. This year National Guard Soldiers were invited to participate. Four states accepted the offer: Missouri, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Read More…

One employer, which has employed the legally blind, visually impaired or otherwise disabled for 75 years, has taken on the mission to employ the nation’s wounded warriors. Since 2012, the AbilityOne Program’s Industries for the Blind, with the support of the Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the Department of the Army and the Army’s warrior transition battalions, has helped wounded warriors achieve post-military success in the civilian workforce through employment with the Wounded Warrior Supply Program. In confronting post-traumatic stress disorder among military veterans, the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and its Fort Thomas Division stand as important battlements. Last year, more than 5,000 of the 43,000 veterans in Greater Cincinnati received treatment for PTSD at the medical center’s main campus, the Fort Thomas facility and six area clinics. When the Fort Thomas program for women opened in 2007, it was just the third in the nation. Read More…

The U.S. Marine who died during a helicopter accident at Camp Lejeune was part of a Virginia-based anti-terror and security team training on how to use ropes to access difficult terrain, officials said. Military officials identified the dead Marine as 31-year-old Staff Sgt. Jonathan Lewis from Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team, Company B, based in Yorktown, Virginia. About 20 Marines from Virginia and North Carolina were participating in training that requires them to exit through the back of a helicopter using suspended ropes. Read More…
