NC Guard combat engineers test knowledge, strength at Sapper Competition North Carolina National Guard via DVIDS Share on LinkedinShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

“What is the first step in evaluating a casualty?” Staff Sgt. Andrew Crouse asks his team as it navigates through the woods of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The team responds in unison while maintaining their pace count at a slight run. While this does not seem like a normal conversation to have during land navigation, it makes perfect sense to those competing in this year’s Sapper Stakes Competition. Read More…

How Congress quietly killed military health care reform The Hill Share on LinkedinShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

After years of resistance, Congress has spoken on military compensation reform. But only about one aspect of the whole package: retirement. Left undone? Health care and education reform. Why does it matter? Retirement “reform” was mostly about expanding and adding new and generous benefits for over 80 percent of the force that only serves one or two tours of duty, then exits the military. Read More…

In unit stalked by suicide, veterans try to save one another The New York Times Share on LinkedinShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

Almost seven years after deployment to Afghanistan, suicide is spreading through an old Marine unit like a virus. Of about 1,200 Marines who deployed with the 2/7 in 2008, at least 13 have killed themselves, two while on active duty, the rest after they left the military. The resulting suicide rate for the group is nearly four times the rate for young male veterans as a whole and 14 times that for all Americans. Read More…
