NC National Guard leader praises partnership with African military  The Fayetteville Observer 

What began as a military partnership between North Carolina and a small African nation has evolved into much more. Speaking from this year’s Africa Land Forces Summit, the North Carolina National Guard Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Gregory A. Lusk praised the bonds the state has built with Botswana since their relationship was formed in 2008 as part of the National Guard State Partnership Program. The annual summit is aimed at bringing African militaries together to solve common issues and bringing regional cooperation to bear against illegal drug trade, poaching and terrorism.  Read More…

Soon-to-deactivate 440th begins flying C-130Hs out of Pope  Air Force Times 

The 440th Airlift Wing plans to fly its first three C-130H Hercules aircraft out of Pope Field in North Carolina recently as it enters the next phase of its deactivation. The Air Force first said in 2014 that it planned to close the Air Force Reserve unit, which it said would save about $116 million. North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., objected and fought the closure, but was unsuccessful. Read More…

More than 300 NC National Guard soldiers return from overseas  WFMY-TV 

Over 300 North Carolina National Guard Soldiers were welcomed home at a Demobilization Ceremony in Greensboro recently. The service members returned home after completing a year-long deployment in support of the Kosovo Force, a North Atlantic Treaty Oganization that leads an international peacekeeping force in Kosovo. Senators back smaller military pay raise for 2017, setting up legislative fight  Military Times 

A Senate panel May 10 backed a 1.6 percent raise for troops in 2017, setting up a military paycheck fight with House lawmakers who have labeled that increase too small. The pay raise target was one of few details of the Senate Armed Services Committee’s draft of the fiscal 2017 defense authorization bill to be released soon. After her husband was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in 2012, Heather Gray never imagined that the biggest obstacle to falling in love again would be financial penalties from the government. But that extra level of stress and heartache are what faces the 37-year-old war widow as she looks at getting remarried this year. She has three children from her first marriage, and her husband-to-be is a widower with three more.
