Service members from the Army to the Marine Corps, civilians, combat injured veterans and police officers rallied at the start line to begin their bicycle journey to Carolina Beach in support of the second annual Guard 2 Beach Ride at Joint Force Headquarters recently. In Washington, D.C., the National Defense Act of 1920 is signed into law. This law amended the National Defense Act of 1916 in two critical ways. First, it required that the Chief of the Militia Bureau be a National Guardsman. With one of their own acting as advocate with the Army’s General Staff, relations between the National Guard and the Army improved dramatically during the interwar period. Second, the 1920 law also allowed National Guard officers to serve on the Army’s General Staff, and required that the General Staff create joint committees containing equal numbers of Guard, Reserve and Regular officers when considering actions that would affect the Guard and Organized Reserves.
