With Hurricane Season already underway, giving birth to three named storms so far, soldiers from the 881st Engineer Company of the North Carolina National Guard trained for swift water rescues recently. The Texas Army National Guard division serves as the higher headquarters during this Multi-Echelon Integrated Brigade Training exercise for a brigade and several specialized units as they train to meet requirements for their annual training cycle. Nine units and more than 5,000 Active and Reserve Component Soldiers from Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas will be participating during this year’s event. Read More…

A refresh of the Pentagon’s recruiting process is the latest example of Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter’s efforts to push his department into the 21st century. Soldiers who survive explosive blasts may suffer from a distinctive pattern of “hidden” brain injury, a small study finds. For the study, researchers analyzed the brain tissue of eight U.S. military personnel who survived blasts but died four to nine days later from their injuries or other causes. The pattern of damage in their brains was different from that seen in civilians with head injuries caused by contact sports, traffic crashes or prescription painkiller abuse, the researchers said.
