It is not a fancy MBA or university program. The organization is the United States military. For many years, military veterans have become entrepreneurs at a much higher rate than nonveterans. Indeed, a shocking 49 percent of World War II veterans went on to own or operate their own businesses, according to a study from Syracuse University. Citizen-warriors and the entire National Guard family are vital to the security of the United States, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said at the National Guard Bureau change-of-responsibility ceremony at the Pentagon. The secretary also promoted Air National Guard Lt. Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel to general. Lengyel takes the National Guard Bureau chief reins from retiring Army Gen. Frank J. Grass. After more than eight years of designing and testing, the Army’s aviation priority takes a step toward becoming a reality. The Advanced Affordable Turbine Engine program is a 3,000-horsepower engine demonstrator program to provide advanced propulsion capability for future Army rotorcraft platforms. It’s a myth that enlisted Soldiers don’t get an education past high school. That’s according to the Army’s senior recruiter, Gen. Jeffrey J. Snow, commander of Army Recruiting Command, and it’s one that might discourage otherwise interested American youth from pursuing a great opportunity with the Army. The general knows that, despite the high value the Army places on education for its enlisted service members, there is a perception among the civilian population that officers go to college and enlisted Soldiers don’t. The Justice Department announced that it had reached a $434,500 settlement with HSBC Finance Corp. over the repossession of cars owned by military service members. The settlement covers the repossessions of 75 cars that occurred between 2008 and 2010 and that federal officials say were done without the proper court orders. The deal resolves allegations that HSBC violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which is designed to safeguard the legal rights of people in the military and provides protection against auto repossessions.
