The United States has the best military in the world today, by far. U.S. forces have few, if any, weaknesses, and in many areas — from naval warfare to precision — strike capabilities to airpower to intelligence and reconnaissance to special operations — they play in a totally different league from the militaries of other countries. Nor is this situation likely to change anytime soon, as U.S. defense spending is almost three times as large as that of the United States’ closest competitor, China, and accounts for about one-third of all global military expenditures — with another third coming from U.S. allies and partners. Officers and non-commissioned officers of the North Carolina National Guard conducted a leadership conference in Raleigh recently. More than 300 Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen were in attendance including 19 general officers, Guard retirees and four state representatives. The North Carolina National Guard’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, provided the theme for the weekend, “Innovative Leadership.” Read More…

In 1973 in Washington, District of Columbia, Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger announced the adoption of the “Total Force Policy” as the new doctrine of American military preparedness. This codified the evolution of the policy that integrated the Active and Reserve Components as one component of national defense. Prior Secretary of Defense Melvin D. Laird and his office planned development of the concept, first announced in August 1970. The Office of the Secretary of Defense sought a long-term solution to problems faced while the divisive Vietnam War raged. Read More…

Veterans reform and military personnel issues are set to take center stage in the presidential election as candidates prepare for the final months of their marathon campaigns. Recently, officials from Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America announced plans for a Sept. 7 town hall forum with both Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump on “national security, military affairs and veterans issues.” Read More…

A ribbon cutting was conducted recently in New London for SECU Veterans Hall, a new dormitory that will house female cadets attending Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy II. The dedication ceremony was attended by representatives from SECU Foundation and State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU), local and state leaders, North Carolina National Guard and Tarheel ChalleNGe officials. A $500,000 grant from SECU Foundation helped to fund the construction of the 60-bed facility. Read More…

Gov. Pat McCrory spent time at the North Carolina National Guard’s 2016 Leaders Workshop honoring a tank crew. The four-member crew is based in Southern Pines and won the 2016 Sullivan Cup at Fort Benning, Georgia back in May during a six-day competition against 15 other teams from across the country.
