From Sept. 22: By Wednesday night, the situation in Charlotte had escalated to the point that it could no longer be handled by the local police and state troopers alone. Considering the violence, damage and safety concerns, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has declared a state of emergency. He’s calling in the National Guard, via the Associated Press. Read More…

From July 14: Full-time National Guard soldiers can now qualify for temporary early retirement, a benefit also known as the 15-year early retirement plan. In a directive signed by Army Secretary Eric Fanning, the Army in late June expanded its use of the Temporary Early Retirement Authority to allow for this additional group of soldiers to qualify. From Nov. 10: The new commander of the North Carolina National Guard’s largest military unit wants the world to know that Old Hickory is standing by. Col. Robert H. Bumgardner, who took the reins of the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team during a Fort Bragg ceremony recently, said the unit will be needed by its state and country in the future. Read More…

From Dec. 1: Troops would get their biggest pay raise in years under the final version of Congress’ annual defense policy bill unveiled Nov. 29. The 2.1-percent increase included in the National Defense Authorization Act would break a five-year trend of raises that have fallen below the private sector. The higher pay would go into effect Jan. 1 if the bill is passed by Congress and it could receive an initial vote in the House on Dec. 2. Read More…

From Aug. 4: Whether drilling with their North Carolina National Guard unit or working their civilian job, NC Guard service members are always ready and always there to protect the citizens of this country. NC Air National Guard Maj. Nate Barron, a traditional drilling Air Guard officer and C-130 instructor pilot works as a captain for American Airlines. A few days ago he came to rescue to one of his flight attendants and subdued a drunk and unruly passenger until law enforcement arrived. Read More…

From Nov. 24: If you’ve always wanted to work for the Air Force but never joined the military, you’re in luck. The Air Force Civilian Service is looking for job seekers with in-demand technical skills in the cyber and acquisition realms. The Air Force is looking to fill about 1,400 cyber and 2,200 acquisition positions by the end of 2017, according to an Air Force press release. Read More…
