NC National Guard soldiers escorted emergency vehicles, rescued hikers amid winter storm  The Fayetteville Observer Share on LinkedinShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

The North Carolina National Guard had 65 soldiers on sate active duty over the weekend, on hand to help where needed during the winter storm that hit parts of the state. The troops were particularly busy in parts of the state that were hardest hit. According to officials, soldiers equipped with larger military vehicles were able to escort emergency personnel on calls to ensure they could get to and from where they were needed. Read More…

Our North Carolina National Guard Association and Time and Place Committee are proud to announce that this year’s 56th annual Convention will be hosted at Sea Trail Resort in Sunset beach between March 18-19. It has been a number of years since we have been at Sea Trail and the coast, we are happy to bring it back by popular demand. With the great accommodations and amenities at the resort we believe this year will surpass previous years’ attendance, so we encourage you to book early. A North Carolina National Guard Lockheed C-130 Hercules plane experienced mechanical issues before its scheduled landing in Des Moines recently. Iowa National Guard Spokesperson Col. Greg Hapgood said the plane landed at Des Moines International Airport at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday. Military advocates are hopeful that, with Donald Trump in the White House, troops’ pay and benefits will improve in coming years. But they’re not letting their guard down just yet. In December, Congress approved the 2.1 percent military pay raise that took effect this month — one-half of a percent point more than the Pentagon’s request — and scrapped controversial plans to scale back troops’ housing stipends. Both moves were praised by those who’ve opposed the Obama administration’s efforts to rein in military personnel costs, reductions the Pentagon deemed necessary as broader defense spending has tightened. Thousands of reservists who deployed over the past two years, thinking they were entitled to the benefits that mobilized and deployed reservists have typically received for years, have been bitterly disappointed upon their return. A little-known provision slipped into the 2012 Defense Authorization Act, which took effect in 2014, denies some members of the National Guard and Reserve the benefits to which they had become accustomed and on which they had relied.
