NCANG C-130s Fly Their Last 8-Ship Formation DVIDS 

“It’s bittersweet, we love the C-130 obviously, but moving forward we have to think about the future and the C-17 will get us there,” said U.S. Air Force Major Joshua Nemitz, a seven year veteran with the North Carolina Air National Guard and lead C-130 Hercules pilot for the exercise.

Defense trade show ‘all about connection’ Fayetteville Observer 

Army Lt. Gen. Laura Richardson presented “a snapshot” of U.S. Army Forces Command, including its role and priorities in today’s Armed Forces, during a welcome breakfast Monday that kicked off the 16th annual N.C. Defense and Economic Development Trade Show. Remotely piloted MQ-9 mission adds value to joint training at Northern Strike DVIDS 

From July 29 through Aug. 11, northern Michigan is host to Northern Strike 17, the U.S. military’s largest reserve component exercise with over 5,000 participants from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, as well as seven partner countries. The result is an influx of military aircraft flying over communities, lakes, and military installations throughout the area, to include Camp Grayling and Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC). August — Today in Guard History National Guard 

1990 Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Walking off of the first American C-141 transport to bring in the first elements what would eventually be more than 527,000 American troops were two Guardsmen from Headquarters Company, 228th Signal Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard. They immediately set up and began operating their single channel tactical satellite radio link keeping the Saudi Defense Ministry in communication with the U.S. Army’s Third Army Headquarters, Fort McPherson, GA. These two men were the first of 37,848 Army Guard personnel to serve in Saudi Arabia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm which finally forced the Iraqi army to evacuate Kuwait. Pace quickens for 173rd Fighter Wing weapons troops during Sentry Eagle DVIDS 

Launching aircraft during Sentry Eagle is a frenetic event as crews work to loft as many as 30 aircraft in under an hour. The typical largest launch for the 173rd Fighter Wing would top out at 12 aircraft, and that alone makes it one of the busiest flying wings in the Air National Guard. N.C. troops train with partners in Moldova, bolster U.S. efforts in Europe Fayetteville Observer 

A visiting U.S. Army general watched closely as North Carolina National Guard troops demonstrated mine detection, clearing obstacles and breaching buildings one morning last week. The soldiers, from the Winston-Salem-based 883rd Engineer Company, were right at home amid the training exercise, demonstrating their skills for the general and other military leaders. Guard-sponsored Academy Project on Hold Sampson Independent 

Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy officials have $700,000 in state money and design plans to improve the Salemburg location with the addition of a multipurpose facility. They just need help bringing the project to fruition. Col. (Ret.) Edward Timmons, state director for Tarheel ChalleNGe, has been in talks with Sampson County officials and those in the Town of Salemburg in recent weeks and brought the academy’s plight to the Sampson Board of Commissioners meeting Monday night. The board ultimately tabled the matter, with further discussion to take place. Read More…
