DoD just recognized these 15 companies as great places for members of the Guard and reserve to work Military Times
If you’re a reservist looking for an employer that will accommodate your military duties, you may not need to look any further than the latest recipients of a prestigious Pentagon award.
Fifteen organizations were recognized with the 2018 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest award given by the Defense Department’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program.
“Our National Guard and Reserve members are a vital part of our national defense and deserve as much support as our country can provide,” Defense Sec. James Mattis said in a news release. “These 15 employers lead the way and we are grateful for their role in helping to keep our nation safe and secure.”
The awardees are the Texas Department of Insurance, Duke Energy, Dunlap Police Department, Crystal Group Inc., AME Swiss Machining LLC, Greencastle Associations Consulting LLC, ArgenTechSolutions Inc., Werner Enterprises Inc., FMI Corp., Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Amazon, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, South Charleston Police Department, Big Sky Advisors and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Face of Defense: Dual-Military Couple Faces Challenges Head-On EIN News
Two Air Force reservists credit the success of their relationship to positive attitudes and continual communications, even as they have endured several geographic separations.
Air Force Tech Sgt. Dawn Gettys met Tech Sgt. Cazavia Henley during a deployment in 2009. Gettys was based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and Henley was based at what was then Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina.
“It was a long-distance [relationship] for a good two to three years, which was hard because when she deployed [again, to Afghanistan in 2012], I was not there when she left or got home,” Gettys said.
The couple is now serving together at the 445th Security Forces Squadron at Wright-Patterson. Both airmen are preparing for nearly simultaneous deployments to separate locations. The women primed for their separation by attending training here hosted by the Air Force Reserve Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, which promotes the well-being of reservists and their loved ones by connecting them with resources before and after deployments.

Staff at the McDonald’s on Crape Myrtle Drive in Benson held a patriotic sendoff for Specialist Amanda Styron, of the North Carolina Army National Guard, who is heading to Cuba for a deployment.
The 22-year-old has been working at the restaurant since she was 16, working nights and overnights.
“We couldn’t be more proud of the reason that you’re leaving our employment to go to protect our country,” said Doris Huebner, the owner of the McDonald’s where Specialist Styron works, during the Tuesday sendoff.
Styron’s family and Congressman David Rouzer (R-7th District) also attended.
July 5 — Today in Guard History National Guard
1952 “Smoke Valley,” South Korea – Kentucky’s 623rd Field Artillery Battalion, armed with eighteen 155mm towed howitzers, moves into this area in support ofX Corps in holding operations against Communist Chinese assaults. During this period it will earn a Republic of Korea Unit Citation for its fire support of South Korea troops in repelling an enemy assault. In October the battalion, the last Guard artillery unit deployed to Korea, will see hard fighting and earns a Navy Unit Commendation embroidered PANMUNJOM for firing missions in support of the 1st Marine Division. The unit served again overseas in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

The North Carolina National Guard Education Foundation is holding it’s 3rd Cruise for Charity! Royal Carribean will set sail on their Adventure Of the Seas cruise on January 19, from Ft. Lauderdale. Cabins start at $709, with a $250/person deposit. Some of the proceeds from each cabin will go to the NCNG Education Foundation.
