Photo of National Guard Carrying Sick Baby to Safety in N.Carolina Snowstorm Wins Hearts Epoch Times

The winter storm that swept across the United States in December 2018 saw quite a few regions blanketed with a thick layer of snow. Many households in North Carolina were left without power for days, and things would’ve turned gloomy for one family in Lenoir had not this hero of a National Guard stepped in.

Sergeant Donovan McPherson, 27, was hailed a hero across social media after footage emerged of him carrying a baby to safety in the snowstorm.

Lenoir was pounded by an astonishing 18 inches of snow, making the roads unnavigable.

North Carolina National Guard Hurricane Florence Citizen-Soldier

North Carolina National Guard Soldiers of C Company 1-120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Armor Brigade Combat Team out of Elizabeth Town N.C. transport evacuees fleeing Hurricane Florence in New Bern NC.

When Hurricanes Florence and Michael struck the southeast coast of the United States late in the summer of 2018, Army National Guard Soldiers, civilian first responders and everyday residents banded together to offer shelter, food and aid to those most impacted by the storms’ devastation.

Over 6,600 National Guard members, sent from at least 28 States, were sent to support the States of North and South Carolina in recovery from Hurricane Florence. That type of unity is what South Carolina’s Adjutant General MG Robert Livingston described as the most effective tool in alleviating the destruction of hurricanes. “Everything is unified,” he said.

At a quarter after seven o’clock in the morning on Sept. 14, 2018, the eye of Hurricane Florence made landfall on the coast of North Carolina, near Wrightsville Beach. The storm lingered. It crept over the landscape at just 6 miles-per-hour (mph), but with maximum sustained winds estimated at 90 mph – making it a slow-moving, yet deadly, Category 1 Hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Ft Hood Soldiers Jump with Black Daggers Ft Hood Sentinel

Eight lucky Fort Hood Soldiers were given the opportunity to do their first ever tandem jump with the U.S. Army Special Operations Command’s Black Daggers Parachute Demonstration Team Feb. 12.

Master Sgt. Chris Malone with the Black Daggers said the team is currently conducting their annual winter training, which provides the team with consistent practice during the slower, winter season. They took the opportunity to practice landing precisely on target.

“Our main focus of training was to hone our canopy accuracy,” Sgt. 1st Class Sean O’Toole said.

While landing in an open field is simple, most of the demonstrations performed by the Black Daggers are done in small areas, so the landing has to be perfect. The parachuting team typically jumps from between 2,000 to 14,000 feet and can perform a variety of stunts.

Fifteen members of the team travelled from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Central Texas, where they practiced from the Salado Airport. The team worked with Fort Hood’s USASOC to find some lucky Soldiers to tandem jump with the team.
