“Old Hickory” Division Commemorative Monument to be erected in France on Battle Site NCNGA

World War One Centennial Commemorative Monument to be erected in France on actual battle site, September 29, 2019. No monument to this heroic action exists.

Dedicated to the North Carolinians of the 30th “Old Hickory” Division 60th Brigade American Expeditionary Force who broke the Hindenburg Line on 29 September 1918.

North Carolina National Guard 42nd CST are evaluated by U.S. Army North DVIDS

Every 18 months the 42nd CST is required to be validated on core tasks, such as the decontamination process, identifying threats and materials, and coordinating with civilian authorities in a realistic setting. This validation proves that the 42nd is ready to respond to a chemical, radiological or biological event.

U.S. Army North provides training and evaluates specialized units in the National Guard to meet homeland defense and homeland security mission sets.

“Every 18 months CST’s go through an evaluation process to reassess and affirm they can still do the job they are designed to accomplish, “ said Derrick Johnson, a civilian team chief within the Army North CST Activity with 20 years of experience.

“They are tested on operational fluidity, medical and analytical processes, and how they advise the incident commander on actions to protect the public,” said Johnson. “These soldiers and airmen sign up to do a very tough and dangerous job, to protect the citizens of NC and our country. What they do is import to protect the general public and the nation against adversaries that may not have our best interests in mind.”

Members of the 42nd CST utilized the entire inventory of equipment to include the command and communication trucks, decontamination station and mobile lab. “We have a mission that is really important and requires a high state of readiness,” said Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Kenna, the 42nd CST information systems analyst who manages the communications truck so “people can talk.”

NC soldiers receive warm homecoming on Father’s Day WSOC

RALEIGH, N.C. – After a yearlong deployment, a group of North Carolina soldiers received a warm homecoming on Father’s Day.

The group of National Guard soldiers from the 514th Military Police Company were greeted with cheers, signs and hugs at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Sunday morning.

The soldiers, based in Pitt County, had been deployed at the Guantanamo Bay Cuba Naval station.

They were previously called to assist on missions involving Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence.

NC HART rescues injured hiker and dog in Polk County NCDPS

Members of the North Carolina Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team, known as NC HART, airlifted an injured hiker and his dog today from a remote area on White Oak Mountain near Mill Spring in Polk County. The elderly man became lost in the woods yesterday evening, and Polk County rescuers searched for him all night, locating him at about 7 a.m. today.

He was injured from a fall and too weak to walk out, so local rescuers requested assistance from the NC HART program. The NC HART crew arrived and hoisted the injured hiker and his dog into the aircraft, along with four tired rescuers who had searched all night. They flew to a nearby landing area and transferred the patient to a waiting ambulance for transport to a local hospital.

NC HART is a North Carolina Emergency Management program that pairs civilian rescuers with military and law enforcement aircraft and aircrews. Local rescue technicians complete extensive rescue training with helicopters and aircrews from the State Highway Patrol and North Carolina National Guard. On any given mission, two or three of the 60 specially-trained technicians are called upon and partnered with an aircrew to rescue stranded or injured persons. Technicians and pilots train together monthly, rotating training sites so they can practice various types of rescues: people stranded in rapidly moving water, on mountains, cliffs or waterfalls.

June 20th — Today in Guard History National Guard

1898 Daiquiri, Cuba – As the American Navy blockades the Spanish fleet in Santiago Harbor, the U.S. Army lands at this little port close to Santiago. They have come to aid Cuban revolutionaries to gain their freedom from Spanish colonial rule. Among the 16,200 troops coming ashore are two Guard volunteer infantry regiments; the 2nd Massachusetts and the 71st New York. Joining them is the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, composed in part of Guardsmen from Arizona and New Mexico. The regiment’s executive officer, Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, would gain national fame (and the Medal of Honor) by leading them in action at Kettle and San Juan Hills on July 1st.
