NORTH CAROLINA (WPDE) — Gov. Roy Cooper addressed North Carolina alongside the Coronavirus Task Force Tuesday.

Gov. Cooper announced last Tuesday that he will be mobilizing the North Carolina National Guard to help with vaccination efforts across the state.

“Ensuring COVID-19 vaccines are administered quickly is our top priority right now,” Governor Cooper wrote in a tweet. “We will use all resources and personnel needed.”

The announcement came as many public health officials and state leaders across the country have begun airing their frustration about the slow moving pace of the vaccination rollout.

Governor Names Military and Veterans Affairs Secretary NC.GOV

Governor Roy Cooper has named retired Lieutenant General Walter Gaskin to lead the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

“After a career at the highest levels of the United States Marine Corps, Walter Gaskin understands well the challenges and opportunities faced by active duty military personnel, veterans and their families and he shares my belief that North Carolina should be the most veteran- and military-friendly state in the nation. I appreciate General Gaskin’s willingness to serve our state in this new capacity and look forward to his leadership at the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs,” said Governor Cooper.

“It is my honor to serve the members of our military, veterans and their families in the state of North Carolina. Although I retired from active duty in 2013, my commitment to providing the opportunities, resources and care owed to our military members and veterans has never ceased. I look forward to working with Governor Cooper and his team as we continue this critical work,” said Gaskin.

RALEIGH, Wake County — Members of the North Carolina National Guard continue to receive COVID-19 vaccinations in an effort to defeat the virus, stop the spread and maintain unit readiness.

The inoculations began Friday and will continue this week; One of the first soldiers to receive the vaccine was North Carolina Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Todd Hunt, NCNG Adjutant General.

“It makes sense, we can protect ourselves by getting this shot,” said Hunt. “It also helps protect the citizens of North Carolina.”
