N.C. National Guard helps with COVID-19 vaccination efforts in Macon County WLOS

MACON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — As COVID-19 vaccination efforts are underway across the state, some counties are getting additional help from the North Carolina National Guard.

Last month, Governor Roy Cooper mobilized National Guard troops to help out at vaccination clinics across the state.

A team of 12 guardsmen and women have been stationed in Macon County for nearly three weeks.

“It has increased our capacity for the ability to get vaccines done in the back and how many shots we can go through,” said Jennifer Garrett, the director of nursing at Macon County Public Health.

County staff say the National Guard’s presence had been a major help, considering the county is rural and residents have shown a high interest in getting vaccinated.

North Carolina National Guardsman uses refurbished Army truck to give veterans military honors WXII

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —
A member of the North Carolina National Guard is using a refurbished Army truck to honor military veterans during their funeral services.

Platoon Sgt. Walter Blower said his full-time job is funerals. He performs taps on a World War II bugle and presents a flag to families of fallen veterans.

And now, he is using his refurbished 1971 Army transport vehicle to honor them, known in the military as a “deuce and a half.”

He said he came up with the idea to use his truck after attending a service for a veteran whose ashes arrived in a cardboard box inside of a beat-up Toyota with the muffler dragging on the ground.

“There were two family members that showed up and the veteran was still literally in the cardboard box that the remains were mailed in,” Sgt. Blower said. “And I was just standing there waiting to do honors and just thinking, ‘My God, that’s no way for someone who served our country to be brought in.'”

Sgt. Blower said he’s seeing more and more funerals for veterans whose families have fallen on hard times. He wants to help and is offering his truck to transport veterans to their final resting place for free.

“One of the things that I think is kind of falling to the wayside nowadays is honor,” Sgt. Blower said. “And, to me, I think it is an extremely honorable thing to do.”

Recruiting the Future and Living the Dream DVIDS

While the world might consider 2020 to be a bad year, there is one member of the North Carolina Air National Guard who used it to excel; that person is U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Nikki Morgan, a Recruiter with the 145th Force Support Squadron. Tech. Sgt. Morgan was recently recognized and coined for an outstanding job performance on February 6, 2021, at the North Carolina Air National Guard base, Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

North Carolina Air National Guard Chief of Staff, Brig. General Alan R. Cecil, presented Technical Sergeant Morgan with the coin. Morgan’s efforts over the past 2 years have helped the Wing stay above 90-percent strength for both Fiscal Year 2019, and 2020.

According to North Carolina Air National Guard State Production Superintendent, Senior Master Sgt. Joe Laskowski, at the beginning of the fiscal year, goals are based off of the Wing’s average losses during the previous 3 years, along with some other factors. For fiscal year 2019, the 145th Airlift Wing’s strength was at 98-percent, for 2020, the Wing was at 100-percent strength, and for 2021, it is at 101.8-percent strength.

Tech. Sgt. Morgan, who started out in the Army National Guard, has only been a recruiter for two and a half years. She then enlisted in the Air National Guard as a personnel specialist before becoming a recruiter. Her decision to become a recruiter was based on her own experience when she enlisted in the Air National Guard.

“I wanted to be a recruiter to help people join the Air National Guard, get the experience like I got, and benefit from the Air Force’s best kept secret,” Tech. Sgt. Morgan explains.

Could Fort Bragg be renamed for a woman? Fayetteville Observer

As Congress starts evaluating the process for renaming military installations that are named after Confederate generals and names are tossed out for consideration, noticeably missing from all the Army’s more than 35 posts are the names of women.

According to a 2020 annual report for the Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, women made up 15.5%, or 74,545, of the regular Army as of September.

In the Reserve, about 24.8%, or 47,770 are women; and 18.9%, or 63,387, of the Army National Guard are women, according to the report.

As of 2019, women represented 17% of the U.S. military, and as of 2015, about 9% of the U.S. veteran population, according to the report.
