NCNGA Selects New Executive Director NCNGA

As the North Carolina National Guard Association faces the challenges and opportunities ahead, our new Executive Director, Christine Quante, brings her collaborative leadership style and commitment to accountability to the North Carolina National Guard, strategic partners, its community and proven record of program design to her new role and vision for moving the NCNGA forward.

The next chapter of the Association will be about building from our strengths, remaining reliable and relevant, and providing meaningful work on behalf of the North Carolina National Guard, its families and retirees. Christine’s priorities will include building on our mission to remember the past, secure the present and improve the future of the members and families of the North Carolina National Guard.

As a strong community leader, extremely talented relationship builder, and a successful fundraiser, Christine is a positive and inspiring leader that will raise awareness and create strategy to accomplish the goals that have been set with the Association. She has a proven track record of building, connecting, and advocating within her community.

Being an active board member of the Tarheel Minuteman Foundation, Christine has worked on the Education Scholarship Committee and the formulation of the recent Strategic Plan for the Association. Her extensive experience in membership relations, government, and public affairs has provided her the opportunity to advocate for the nonprofit community, advocate on behalf of the members, and take positions of support.

“Making a difference in the lives of others is a true motivator in my life and work”, says Christine.

Christine is married to Lionel Todd, Jr. who is a North Carolina National Guard Veteran and they share four adult children.

Guard Saved Lives, Property, Responding to 2022 Disasters ANG

With approximately 450,000 members, the National Guard plays a role in every element of the National Defense Strategy, including defending the homeland. Over half of its members were involved in lifesaving natural disaster responses in 2022.

Throughout the year, 142,000 Guard members responded to wildfires across 19 states, 18,000 to floods across eight states, 12,000 to winter storms across 19 states, 1,700 to tornadoes and 1,000 to severe weather and volcanic activity.

“My motto is: ‘The answer is yes; what’s the question?’ “said Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau. “The manning, training, and equipping that we receive to fight our nation’s wars enables us to do virtually anything in the homeland, which is why you see the National Guard really at the lead, along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in hurricanes, wildfires, floods, or any disaster that occurs in the United States. If our nation needs the National Guard to do anything, we will find a way to do it.“

The emergency response to Hurricane Ian marked the year’s largest single-event disaster relief operation. More than 63,000 National Guard members from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington responded — saving over 2,000 people and 50 pets.

“As Guardsmen, it’s an honor and pleasure to be able to serve in disasters like this. When you see disasters like this, it’s awful and you want to be able to plug in and do your part to serve,” said Air Force Capt. Jason Davis, a civil engineering officer with the Florida Guard’s 202nd Red Horse Squadron.

The Guard conducted relief operations simultaneously in Puerto Rico and Alaska in September following Hurricane Fiona and Typhoon Merbok.

More than 14,000 Puerto Rican and Virgin Islands National Guard members answered Gov. Pedro Pierluisi’s call for help after Fiona’s heavy rains and damaging winds caused widespread damage, flooding, mudslides and power outages in Puerto Rico. Rescue teams evacuated more than 1,000 people.

NC Air Guard Retiree’s Breakfast NCNGA

The NC Air National Guard, 145th Airlift Wing has scheduled our annual Retiree’s Breakfast this year for Friday, February 3rd, 2023! We’re going to be reaching out to the Retiree Emails we have on file, so please network with your fellow retiree’s to make sure they get the word and to ensure widest possible dissemination. We want to get the word out to as many of our retired members as possible. If anyone wants to sign up on our email list, just have them send me and email at the address below. The Chief’s Council, sponsors of the event, look forward to seeing you in February. It’s not necessary to respond to this email, or to RSVP, we’ll keep you updated and I’ll send out additional emails between now and the event. Save the Date: Tarheel Minuteman Foundation Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament! NCNGA

The Tarheel Minuteman Foundation is holding the annual Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on April 24, 2023! This event will take place at the beautiful Lakes Course at Carolina Trace Country Club. All proceeds will assist in providing scholarships to members of the North Carolina National Guard and their families.

Online registration for players and sponsorships will be open next Thursday, January 12th.

After a slow recruiting year, states are trying new ways to attract people to the National Guard WUSF

The National Guard fell about 9,000 troops short of its goal in 2022. Some states are improving their outreach and incentive plans to try to counter that trend.
This holiday season, the 42nd infantry division of the New York Army National Guard took its concert band on the road, performing holiday classics at community centers across the state.

The performances are part outreach and part recruiting, with Guard members front and center in the communities they serve.

“We’re really excited about this partnership,” said flautist and staff sergeant Pamela Pfiel, as the band visited the Warrior Ranch on Long Island, where veterans and civilians train rescued horses.

“The band is a very forward-facing unit,” Pfiel said. “We kind of look at ourselves as musical ambassadors to our communities, and we bridge that gap between the military and our civilian population.”

In part because of outreach like this, New York was the only state in the country to meet its recruitment goal for the Army National Guard this year. Thirty-one states fell short of their Army recruiting goals by over 40%, and the Guard as a whole missed its target by 9,000 troops, according to the National Guard Bureau, the federal office that oversees the state Guards.

New York has bucked the trend in part because it treats every event as a recruiting opportunity, according to Lt. Col. Josh Heimroth, who handles recruitment and retention for the New York Guard.

“There’s not one way of doing business,” Heimroth said. “You’ve got to have multiple lines in the pond to catch the fish.”
