The North Carolina National Guard will provide everything a Soldier or Airman needs in war, weapon, check, training, check, leadership, check but what about a job and a different kind of check when they get back? The NCNG Education and Employment Center took that mission to help any Service member find a job and celebrated their 999th and 1,000th hire at a ceremony held at NCNG Headquarters, April 30, 2015. Spc. Franklin Jones, a NCNG Soldier with E Company, 230th Brigade Support Battalion, and his boss Koren Losack of Kelly Services joined retired Active Duty Air Force Master Sgt. Jody Miller and his new boss Lauren Mauldin, a manager with Nationwide Insurance at the ceremony. Read More…

On 23 June 2015, HQ DA awarded the North Carolina Army National Guard (NCARNG) the National Guard’s “Most Improved” state for its Army Communities of Excellence (ACOE) submission during a ceremony in the Pentagon Auditorium. The NCARNG participates annually in the ACOE Program and achieved third Place, Silver Division, for its submission (seventh out of 54 states and territories). The Smithfield armory is like thousands of others built in the decades surrounding World War II, small and simple buildings often utilized to host the Boy Scouts, community activities, dances and weddings. But with maintenance costs on older buildings rising and the military drawing down from two wars, the National Guard has directed states to make their network of facilities more efficient. Many states like North Carolina are looking for money to construct larger regional hubs while trimming costs by consolidating older units. Read More…

ech. Sgt. David Maddeford, Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) with the 118th Air Support Operations Squadron (ASOS), New London, North Carolina, made history as one of five graduates of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School to be awarded the coveted graduate patch and enter into an elite group of “patch wearer” brethren during the school’s class 15-A graduation ceremony held June 27, 2015, in Las Vegas. As the first and only enlisted patch wearers in the school’s 66-year history, Maddeford will join 24 JTAC Weapons Instructor Course past graduates, who will now also be awarded patches. Read More…

Lawmakers look to arm NC National Guard members

North Carolina legislators are considering a bill that allows the North Carolina National Guard to arm its service members at recruiting centers. State Sen. Dan Soucek sponsored the measure in response to last month’s killing of five servicemen outside a Navy Reserve center in Chattanooga, T.N. Soucek said policy keeping Guardsmen unarmed makes them potential targets for terrorists. Read More…

On Aug. 1, 1956, at Floyd Bennett Field, New York, Capt. Norma Parsons becomes the first woman to join the National Guard when she was sworn in as a nurse in the 106th Tactical Hospital, New York Air National Guard. Only two days earlier, and after much debate, Congress finally enacted Public Law 845 allowing the participation of women in the Guard. But there were serious restrictions. Only female officers were allowed and they could only serve as nurses or in medically-related specialties such as dietitians, physical therapists or laboratory technicians. Not until November 1967 did Congress amend this law to allow the enlistment of women in Guard. Read More…

The ambitious effort to overhaul the military personnel system that is underway inside the Pentagon could lead to huge changes in the way troops are paid, including the creation of unique pay tables for high-demand career fields and new cash bonuses for high-performing troops, according to several defense officials. The reform effort is nearing its final phase as top defense officials in early August began distributing draft copies of a massive report to the four services for their review, several defense officials told Military Times. Sen. John McCain introduced a bill that would extend the VA Choice Card program indefinitely and expand eligibility to include every veteran enrolled in VA health care. Saying the Veterans Affairs Department has been “slow to implement the program” since enactment a year ago of the law broadening private care options for veterans, the Arizona Republican believes his bill would remove any lingering uncertainty about the program, which will end in 2017.
