Recruiters from the 145th Force Support Squadron received The Regional Golden Eagle Award for top-performance in 2014, as well as seven individual awards during a ceremony held June 7, 2015 at the North Carolina Air National Guard base, Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Brig. Gen. Roger E. Williams, Jr., Assistant Adjutant General for Air, North Carolina Air National Guard, had the honor of presenting the awards. Thirteen states competed for the awards after being evaluated on the most accessions, which includes enlistments and commissions, community involvement, school outreach and retention rates. The North Carolina Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 130th Attack Reconnaissance Regiment, conducted their second annual Carolina Thunder aviation training exercise at Fort Bragg and at the Stanly County Airport in New London, North Carolina, July 31–Aug. 2, 2015. Carolina Thunder 2015 was a multi-state, multi-component training exercise that included participation from the NCARNG (aviation and artillery), North Carolina Air National Guard, South Carolina Army National Guard, Alabama Army National Guard, and active-duty Airmen, Soldiers and Special Forces personnel. Soldiers assigned to the 105th Military Police Battalion, 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, North Carolina Army National Guard (NCARNG), conducted CPR training, a combat lifesaving class and Army warrior tasks training in preparation for their future deployment to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at the National Guard armory at Asheville, North Carolina, on Aug. 1, 2015. This will be first deployment of a NCARNG battalion to GITMO. Read More…

On Aug. 17, 1969, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Hurricane “Camille” slams into the state packing winds up to 215 mph (Category 5). It kills 136 people across the state, mostly along the coast. More than 3,200 Mississippi Guardsmen, Army and Air, are called to active state duty to render aid ranging from evacuating citizens from flooded areas to providing housing in armories for the homeless, to traffic control and protecting heavily damaged communities from looting. Some of the men were on duty for more than a week. The storm quickly moved north dumping huge amounts of rain in the mountains of western Virginia, causing massive flooding and killing at least 100 persons. Nearly 700 Virginia Guardsmen, like their comrades in Mississippi, immediately began search and rescue operations. Read More…

Active-duty soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, Washington National Guardsmen and Air Force reservists from three bases have joined the fight against wildfires raging in the West. With the approval of Defense Secretary Ash Carter, the National Interagency Fire Center announced that 200 soldiers from Fort Lewis will mobilize as firefighters. It is the first time since 2006 the Defense Department has allowed the mobilization of active-duty members to serve as firefighters to assist NIFC. Read More…

A bill allowing some North Carolina National Guard members to carry concealed handguns while on duty is now law. Gov. Pat McCrory signed the measure recently at a ceremony at National Guard headquarters in Raleigh. The provision was added to legislation that also creates a new legal action for people injured by terrorists can use in North Carolina courts. Read More…

Two female officers will make history Friday by becoming the first women to graduate from the traditionally all-male U.S. Army Ranger School, officials said. The West Point graduates, who have not been identified, are in their final days of the grueling two-month leadership training program.
