North Carolina National Guard helicopter rescue crews are in South Carolina to help rescue drivers and residents trapped by flood waters. About 20 Guard troops and 10 civilian paramedics and firefighters are working under the S.C. National Guard at the request of Gov. Nikki Haley. The Helo Aquatic Rescue Teams are based in Salisbury. It is said that the “third time is a charm,” that is the case with the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate North Carolina Army National Guard, who have received the Chief of Staff Award for Excellence in Legal Assistance for the third consecutive time at the NCNG Joint Force Headquarters. The legal assistance program provides effective legal assistance to all eligible service members, their families and retirees, regardless of branch of service. The program goal is to support the command while improving morale, readiness and effectiveness. Read More…

On Oct. 6, 2001, the United States begins its first air strikes of Operation Enduring Freedom, the attack against the Taliban government giving refuge to Usama Bin Laden, leader of the Al Qaida attacks of Sept. 11. Among the first aircraft flying over the hostile countryside are EC-130s of the 193rd Special Operations Wing, Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Read More…

Work is underway to use part of a privately owned area in the middle of DuPont State Recreational Forest known as the “donut hole” for emergency response training facilities. Rep. Chris Whitmire, R-District 113), is working with the forest’s namesake company DuPont and state agencies to establish emergency response training facilities at the former X-ray film manufacturing site. A portion of the 57-acre former DuPont plant site and surrounding 420 acres is set to become a training center for the National Guard and other agencies. Read More…

Defense legislation lawmakers agreed to recently would let commanders authorize troops to carry guns on military bases in the U.S. The annual defense authorization bill calls for Defense Secretary Ashton Carter to establish a process by Dec. 31 in which commanders can authorize a service member at a military installation, reserve center, recruiting location or defense facility in the U.S. to carry a gun on the premises if he or she “determines that carrying such a firearm is necessary as a personal- or force-protection measures.” Read More…

Despite an ongoing Pentagon campaign to combat suicide, the numbers of troops who killed themselves held steady in the first half of 2015, with active duty numbers down and reserve numbers up over the same period last year, according to the most recent Department of Defense statistics. The Defense Department quarterly statistics, released Sept. 30, show 219 troops took their lives in the first half of this year, as compared to 223 in the first half of 2014. Military suicides are down 8 percent from the first half of 2013, when there were 238. Read More…

The NFL might soon be pressured for a nearly $7-million donation to the military or veteran charity of its choice. That is the money the league has reaped during the past three years from the Army National Guard for paid troop tributes during games — a practice that triggered outrage on Capitol Hill when it was revealed earlier this year. The Senate voted to override a filibuster recently on an annual defense policy bill that would ban the practice and also admonishes the NFL to tally up the taxpayer dollars it has collected and donate an “equivalent amount” to charities.
