Lawmakers have reduced the 2016 defense policy bill by $5 billion to comply with the budget deal between Congress and the president, including $2.6 billion in “adjustments” to acquisition programs, according to a document circulating online. The reductions, levied across several dozen line items, amount to several billion dollars in “pain,” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. William “Mac” Thornberry, R-Texas, said. Read More…

The Army National Guard and Army Reserve need more than 39 days of training a year in order to truly be an operational force, the commanding general of First Army said recently. Thirty-nine days a year — 14 days of annual training and one weekend a month — is not enough time, especially for units that are linked to a platform such as a helicopter, tank or Bradley, Lt. Gen. The Company Grade Committee and the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States recently released a survey to gauge thoughts on comments by Lt. Gen. Michael Tucker, the commanding general of the First Army. Tucker recently stated that the Army National Guard and Army Reserve need more than 39 days of training each year to be an operational force. During the ceremony to dedicate Duplin County’s monument honoring its men who died in World War II, Wallace native David Stephen Williams will be presented the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously, with his daughter, Judy Williams Gibson of Goldsboro, accepting the medal for the family on his behalf. In 1795 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, 11th President of the United States James K. Polk is born. After graduating from law school in North Carolina he moved to Tennessee to practice law. There he became a close friend of General Andrew Jackson. Based upon this relationship, in 1821 Polk, with Jackson’s support, was commissioned as a captain in the Maury County, Tennessee militia. For the first time since returning home from Afghanistan in 2012, N.C. National Guard Sgt. Kyle Snyder finally has his own home. Operation: Coming Home, which builds homes for wounded veterans in the Triangle, has almost finished a home in the Traditions subdivision for Snyder, his wife, Joann Snyder, and their children. The Snyders have been renting homes since Kyle Snyder returned from service after being injured by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. Read More…

Forty-seven senators from both sides of the aisle have reminded the National Commission on the Future of the Army of the important role played by the reserve components and want commissioners to consider that role as they prepare their report for Congress and the president.
