The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. Nominations must come from a Guard or Reserve member who is employed by the organization they are nominating, or from a family member. The award was created to publicly recognize employers who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees. Read More…

Four very deserving Non-Commissioned Officers were awarded the Adjutant General’s Achievement Medal. Recognized were SSG Chris McKinnon, who represented the 60th Troop Command for the 2015 USO Spirit of Freedom Award and made the Commandant’s List while attending the U.S. Army Advanced Leadership Course; SFC Ashley Simmons, who demonstrated exceptional performance during State Active Duty for Hurricane Joaquin and to South Carolina emergency response; SFC David Abernathy for exceptional performance as the G2 NCOIC during State Active Duty for Hurricane Joaquin and to South Carolina emergency response; 1SG Teddy Whitaker as the State Retention NCOIC who led the nation in full fielding of the Retention Management System and accomplishment of the FY-15 State Retention Mission. In 1918 in France, the armistice ending World War I takes effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. More than 325,876 American soldiers are casualties during the war. Of this number 115,660 died (from all causes including disease). Given the way records were kept, there is no accurate number as to how many of these casualties were Guardsmen. However, since nearly half of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) was composed of 18 Guard divisions plus numerous non-divisional units and individual Guardsmen were assigned to non-Guard units, it is surely a high number. Another way to measure Guard involvement is the fact that the 30th Division (NC, SC, TN) has 12 men awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest number of any division in AEF. Read More…

A man has been charged in the home invasion and shooting of a North Carolina mom. Semantha Bunce, 21, a combat medic in the National Guard, was in her Charlotte home breast-feeding her 4-month-old son in her bedroom when intruders barged in, according to CNN affiliate WSOC. As the intruders broke into the home and opened fire, Bunce fired back with her own weapon. Read More…

Margaret Cochran Corbin was born today in 1751, she was a soldier’s wife. Her husband fought in the Revolutionary War. When her husband was killed in battle, Margaret took his place. The Continental Congress approved the granting of a lifetime soldier’s half-pay pension to her. She was thereafter included on military rolls and in April 1783 was formally mustered out of the Continental Army. Read More…

Weeks after falling under a White House veto, a new, slightly slimmer defense authorization bill has passed the U.S. House. The 2016 National Defense Authorization Act was approved by a wide margin, by a vote of 370-58. The most high-profile of provisions affecting Fort Bragg is one that provides added protection to Fort Bragg’s 440th Airlift Wing, which has been slated for inactivation next year. Read More…

Today there are roughly 500 soldiers/veterans still alive who were members of one of World War II’s greatest infantry divisions, the 30th Infantry Division. With the exception of some senior officers and non-commissioned officers, the 30th ID was an all National Guard force with soldiers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.
