The Department of Defense (DoD) Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) provides real solutions for real needs while ensuring that people with disabilities and wounded service members have equal access to the information environment and opportunities in the Federal government. As outlined in the recently signed Department of Defense Instruction 6025.22, CAP works closely with medical providers, therapists, case managers, and military liaisons at military treatment facilities (MTFs) to increase awareness and availability of assistive technology (AT). With less than one percent of the American population having served in the military, it can also be said that our nations veterans, who are so few in numbers are also owed a debt of gratitude by the many, especially on Veterans Day. Today there are roughly 500 soldiers/veterans still alive who were members of one of World War II’s greatest infantry divisions, the 30th Infantry Division. With the exception of some senior officers and non-commissioned officers, the 30th ID was an all National Guard force with soldiers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. In 1969, Apollo 12’s lunar module, “Intrepid,” touches down safely on the moon’s Ocean of Storms. Under the command of Charles “Pete” Conrad, Jr., the only former Guardsman to ever make it to the lunar surface, this is the second manned mission to the Moon. Unlike the other six former Guardsmen turned astronauts during the Apollo program, Conrad had no Air Guard background. Instead he had been a member of the Pennsylvania Army Guard’s 103rd Reconnaissance Troop prior to entering Annapolis and beginning a Navy flying career. Read More…
