The head of the Army National Guard is looking to see if training one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer is enough to ensure Guard troops are ready for future fights. Army Maj. Gen. Timothy Kadavy, who took over as director for the Army National Guard in March, is assessing the readiness needs of the Guard at the request of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley. Read More…

In early October, the National Interagency Fire Center lowered the National Wildfire Preparedness level to one, its lowest level of five indicating national large fire activity had reduced to minimal levels. With this, and with what appears to be the end of hot, dry conditions in the western U.S., the 2015 aerial fire fighting season may be drawing to a close for the Air Force Reserve’s 302nd Airlift Wing Modular Airborne Fire Fighting equipped C-130s and aircrews. The commission tasked with examining the future force structure of the US Army is taking a close look at the possibility of incorporating multicomponent aviation units made up of both full-time troops and reservists, according to commission member and former Pentagon comptroller Bob Hale. Hale is the leader of the National Commission on the Future of the Army’s Aviation Subcommittee, charged with looking at one of the more controversial plans the service has for its future force structure. The 30th Infantry Division was made up of the existing National Guard units from the States of North and South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee at the beginning of WWII. The 30th served valiantly at St. LO and at Mortain in France; it was the first infantry division to enter Belgium and The Netherlands. Read More…

Syrian refugees did not completely dominate debate Nov. 19 on Capitol Hill. Sen. John McCain said the Paris terror attacks should also move Congress to finally lift caps on future defense spending. As the lead plaintiff in a new voting rights lawsuit filed recently, Army veteran Luis Segovia and five other individuals are challenging federal and state voting laws that have denied U.S. citizens living in the territories the ability to vote in presidential elections. The six U.S. citizens, who are all former Illinois residents now living in Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, jointly filed a lawsuit in Illinois’ northern district court with the nonprofit groups Iraq, Afghanistan and Persian Gulf Veterans of the Pacific and the League of Women Voters of the Virgin Islands. An Army noncommissioned officer with 33 years of service has been selected as senior enlisted adviser to Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Command Sgt. Maj. John W. Troxell will replace Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bryan B. Battaglia as the military’s top enlisted servicemember in December, when Battaglia is slated to retire after 36 years of service, Dunford announced Nov. 18. Read More…

Troops nearing the end of their military career can take a close look at their retirement pay options with a new online calculator tool released Nov. 17. The Center for Naval Analyses is offering the calculator to show troops the difference between the traditional “high-3” plan, which bases retirement pay on average basic pay during the three highest-paying years on active duty, or the so-called “REDUX” plan, which provides a $30,000 upfront cash bonus with smaller retirement checks over time.
