As much of the East Coast hunkered down in the midst of a ferocious winter storm, National Guard citizen-soldiers and citizen-airmen were poised to assist local and state emergency agencies. With the impending winter storm, Jonas, set to impact the East Coast region, The North Carolina National Guard prepared their forces to respond alongside North Carolina Emergency Management in support to the state. The winter conditions posed a significant threat to Citizens in North Carolina and in response the NCNG has been working with State Emergency Response partners, mobilizing 100 Guardsmen in Eastern, Central and Western North Carolina to support local authorities. Before danger struck, this keeper of a tower thousands of feet in the air left his shelter from a historic storm in pursuit of more keeping: tending to the trolley car system below. Ralph Rodriguez, a transmitter engineer for WLOS, was staying in a shelter at the base of the transmission tower atop Mount Pisgah while a storm whipped through the mountains, dumping as much as two feet of snow in the higher elevations. Veterans Affairs officials want to speed the benefits appeals process, simplify their websites and hotlines, and fix lingering problems with outside care programs — all within the next 11 months. Department Secretary Bob McDonald unveiled an ambitious list of goals for his department in 2016 during a Senate hearing Jan. 21, saying the moves build on continuing reform efforts already underway. Army National Guard soldiers eligible for education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill have had the option of transferring some or all of those benefits to their spouse or children, but they may miss out on taking full advantage of that if they don’t elect to do so while still in uniform. “Once Soldiers separate from service the option to transfer is no longer possible,” said Ken Hardy, chief of the Army National Guard Education Branch at the National Guard Bureau, adding that sometimes Soldiers may not have those education benefits in mind as they move through their career or prepare to transition out of the service.  Read More…

Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter said Jan. 19 that the number of U.S. troops deployed to Iraq will likely increase, citing the recent success in taking the city of Ramadi back from the Islamic State and a need to train more Iraqi military and police units as the campaign against the militants expands. Carter said that the additional U.S. troops would be part of a larger force of military advisers that also could include more troops from countries whose defense ministers he met with Jan. 20.
