A graduation ceremony was held recently for 13 U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the Multinational Battle Group-East Forward Command Post, who made the most of their deployment time by completing an emergency medical technician course at Camp Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, Kosovo. The course, which was held during Soldiers’ downtime over four months, will help the group of North Carolina Army National Guard Soldiers return to their post-deployment civilian careers with additional skills and qualifications. Col. Erik Gilbert nods his head in approval as he watches the closest thing the Global Response Force has to a NASCAR pit crew. In weather he described as cold and miserable, Gilbert had a team of soldiers swarming over an AH-64D Apache helicopter. Its goal: to have the Apache in the air as soon as possible. Gilbert, the commander of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, said the soldiers’ efforts are instrumental to the continued success of the nation’s Global Response Force. Read More…

The Veterans Affairs health system fares slightly better than other hospitals when it comes to lower mortality rates among older men with heart attack, heart failure, or pneumonia, according to a new study by Yale School of Medicine researchers. The study, published in the current issue of Journal of the American Medical Association, also showed slightly higher readmission rates at VA hospitals for all three conditions, both nationally and within similar geographic areas. In our quest to continue to enhance our Annual Convention as well as to increase our leverage as a Military leader, we are proud to announce the addition of a Candidate Forum during this year’s Convention. We are working with the candidates for N.C. Governor, U.S. Senate and N.C. Lt. Governor this year to attend our convention and answer questions from our membership.
