The Army’s smallest military construction budget in years means there will be fewer new projects on Fort Bragg than in years past. But it will still see some work, as it is bolstered by continued growth in special operations. Across the state, North Carolina once again will see one of the largest military construction booms in the nation. The state, which is home to several major military installations, will see more than $297 million in new construction based on the 2017 budget proposal. Read More…

On Feb. 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln was born. An Illinois resident in 1832, when the governor called for volunteers to fight against the Sac Indians under their warchief Black Hawk, Lincoln enlisted in his local militia company. He was quickly elected captain, a moment he later recalled with pride. The war ended before he saw any combat and he was soon mustered out. Read More…

The Rural Guard and Reserves Act of 2016 introduced in the House last week would remove a $300 cap on travel reimbursement for qualifying National Guardsmen and Reservists who face long or expensive commutes to training exercises or other activities. Sponsored by Rep. Mark Takai, D-Hawaii, and Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, the bill would more fairly compensate reserve-component members who face expensive or long commutes to fulfill their duty. The latest report from the Pentagon on military suicides shows a slight uptick in the suicide rate among active-duty personnel in 2014 compared with the previous year, but significant drops in rates for Reserve and National Guard members when compared to 2013. Read More…

UNCC officials hope voters will agree with them on March 15 that UNCC needs a larger, updated sciences building. On the primary ballot, North Carolina voters will be asked to vote yes or no on a proposal to allow the state to borrow $2 billion — with two-thirds going to the state’s public universities and community colleges. The rest would be spent on water and sewer projects, state parks and facilities for agriculture, public safety and the National Guard. Read More…
