The chief of the National Guard Bureau told Congress that converting its uniformed technicians into federal civilian employees will hamper the Guard’s ability to respond to domestic emergencies. Gen. Frank J. Grass’s recent warning to lawmakers came two weeks after 41 governors wrote a letter asking Congress to repeal a legal change requiring the conversion of certain National Guard military technicians into non-uniformed, federal civilian employee status. A new National Army Museum near Washington will honor two female soldiers with ties to Fort Bragg and the Fayetteville region. Capt. Kimberly Hampton, a helicopter pilot killed in Iraq in 2004, was the first female 82nd Airborne Division soldier to die in combat. First Lt. Ashley White-Stumpf of Raeford was a member of the N.C. National Guard who was killed in Afghanistan in 2011. Read More…

On March 29, 1790 in Charles City County, Virginia, future 10th President of the United States John Tyler is born. He served as a Captain of the Charles City Rifle Company during the War of 1812. His unit, as part of the Second Elite Corps of the Virginia militia commanded by the state’s adjutant general, moved to Tidewater, Virginia to repel a British invasion force in the Norfolk area in 1813. As this army approached the enemy sailed away. Tyler resigned his commission in 1815 to pursue a legal career. Read More…
