The Air Force is taking a key step toward developing a dedicated close-air support plane to replace the A-10 “Warthog,” a top general said recently. Speaking to reporters following a breakfast hosted by the Air Force Association, Lt. Gen. Mike Holmes, the deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements, said a list of possible requirements for the aircraft will soon be given to Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh. On April 13, 1970, in space, “Houston, We’ve Had A Problem!” is a message that could have been the NASA’s worst nightmare, three astronauts lost in space. The man who said it, former Air Guard Captain John “Jack” Swigert was one of three crew members of the ill-fated Apollo 13 heading for a moon landing. Along with him was another former Air Guard pilot, Captain Frederick Haise, Jr. Both Guardsmen joined NASA as test pilots before becoming astronauts. Swigert had flown in both the Massachusetts and Connecticut ANG while Haise had served in the Oklahoma and Ohio ANG. Read More…

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced that Russia would develop a national guard to fight terrorism and crime, but a recently released video from Open Russia purports to show the guard training to suppress something that looks like a civilian protest. The video shows scores of troops with riot shields corralling a group of unarmed mock protesters with stun and smoke grenades, and presumably non-lethal ammunition. Read More…

The Army’s response to the recommendations of the National Commission on the Future of the Army will be in the hands of Defense Secretary Ash Carter this week, Gen. Mark A. Milley, the service’s chief of staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. The commission formed by Congress studied how the Army should prepare to meet future threats. It was prompted largely because the Army planned to remove all AH-64 Apache helicopters from the Army National Guard, a move fought by NGAUS and the Guard. Read More…
