A veteran will likely be on your election ballot this fall, but maybe not in the race you expected. The study is the first comprehensive look at veterans’ political involvement on a state level and indicates that despite years of declining veteran representation in Congress, the pipeline of potential candidates for national office may be refilling. New research from the American Enterprise Institute found that roughly 1 in 7 lawmakers serving in state legislatures is a veteran, totaling more than 1,000 former military members nationwide. On April 26, 1865 in Durham, North Carolina, Confederate General Joseph J. Johnson surrenders his Army of the Tennessee to Union General William T. Sherman at Bennett’s Home. Following General Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, this was the last sizable Confederate force still in the field. Among the Confederate units surrendering was the 5th Georgia Infantry Regiment, organized in May 1861, contained several prewar uniformed militia companies including the “Clinch Rifles.” Read More…

House lawmakers want a 2.1 percent military pay raise for next year and a force expansion totaling 27,000 troops beyond the Pentagon’s request, according to their first draft of the annual defense authorization bill released recently. The legislation, which features hundreds of defense spending priorities and policies for fiscal 2017, also includes an overhaul of military judicial rules but does not yet include any major military medical reform measures. House Armed Services Committee staff said those proposals will be unveiled next week. Read More…

Gov. Pat McCrory is trying to encourage state agencies to hire more veterans. For the past three years, the state has been working with private employers through the NC4ME project, or North Carolina for Military Employment. When not wrenching on a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter for 40 hours a week, one Alaska Army National Guardsman trades in her flight suit for a pair of sneakers and the dance floor. Sgt. Brianna McMillen is a crew chief with 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment, and has served five years in the Alaska Army National Guard. The crew chief seat however, takes a backseat to her true passion: break dancing. Read More…

Boeing wins U.S. Army helicopter deal worth $1.5 billion Reuters  Share on LinkedinShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

Boeing Co. said it had won a U.S. Army contract valued at about $1.5 billion to remanufacture 117 AH-64D Apache helicopters to the new AH-64E model. The agreement brings the total number of AH-64E model Apaches under contract for the Army to 290, with an additional 400 helicopters likely to be ordered in coming years. Read More…
