After more than 15 years of war — most of it in counter-insurgency operations — in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army is returning its focus to the basics of soldiering, intent on building an Army ready to face a wide array of threats around the world. This is critical as the Army gets smaller and budget cuts force the service to slow down its modernization priorities. And it is also critical as the Army works to rebuild a set of skills that have declined in the face of ever-improving technology and the internet. Read More…

Please make plans to join us on Monday, 26 September 2016 at River Oaks Golf Club for our 9th Annual Len Adams Memorial Golf Tournament Fundraiser. This year’s tournament honors SFC Russell Thorington’s retirement from the NCARNG. SFC Thorington has been a longtime supporter of the NCNGAEF and he is retiring in November 2016. Another year of annual training has ended for the North Carolina Army National Guard’s 514th Military Police Company, but this year, the training was not like any other. This year, the soldiers participated in a two-week regional homeland security exercise, dubbed Operation Vigilant Seahawk, designed to improve communication and coordination with state and federal partners in case of a major disaster. On July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut, 43rd President of the United States George W. Bush is born. Raised in Midland, Texas, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1968. Upon graduation he joined the 111th Fighter Squadron, Texas Air National Guard. After completing a year’s flight training he became an F-102 Delta Dagger fighter-interceptor pilot. His unit, which was organized in 1923 as the 111th Observation Squadron, an element of Texas’ 36th Division, had fought in Europe during World War II and was one of only six Air Guard squadrons to actually fight in Korea during that war. An end of an era as a North Carolina National Guard veteran of war, numerous state active duty missions and hundreds of drill assemblies, and after more than 55 years of service begins a new mission; serve the town of Wallace, North Carolina. This veteran is not a Soldier but was home to many as the NCNG’s armory in Wallace, since 1961. It officially became property of the town after a brief ceremony with town leaders on site here, June 29, 2016. Read More…

North Carolina Army National Guard medics, with the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, jump up and run when they hear that a man is down at the FLA (field litter ambulance) during a medical field training exercise at Camp Lejeune. The exercise, administered by the 163rd Area Support Medical Company, is based on extreme real-world scenarios that military health care specialists may have to face in a combat zone while maintaining a level head and steady hand. Lawmakers returned to Capitol Hill July 5 with a list of critical defense bills to advance before their extended summer break begins July 15, even if none of them has a chance to become law before this fall. Most of that work requires Senate action, with the annual defense appropriations bill awaiting floor debate this week and the annual defense authorization bill needing procedural approval from senators to move ahead to conference work.
