Warrant Officers representing all of North Carolina National Guard’s Major Subordinate Commands (MSC) came together at Joint Force Headquarters recently to discuss the current state of the Warrant Officer Corps, future plans and challenges and to celebrate the Corps 98th Anniversary. In honor of the Corps 98th anniversary, the day Congress authorized the creation of the Army Mine Planter Service warrant officer ranks and grades, NCNG warrant officers, officers, and noncommissioned officers gathered in the JFHQ auditorium for an impromptu concert presented by NC Guard’s 440th Army Band. At the end of the concert an official warrant officer painting was presented and will be displayed at JFHQ. Read More…

On July 14, 1825 in New York City, New York, the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1824-1825 was in every sense a triumphal procession. The 2nd Battalion, 11th New York Artillery, was one of many militia turned out to welcome him. This unit decided to adopt the title “National Guard” in honor of Lafayette’s command of the Garde Nationale de Paris during the French Revolution. The 11th Battalion, later designated as the 7th Regiment, was prominent in the line of march on the occasion of Lafayette’s final passage through New York en route home to France. Read More…

Full-time National Guard soldiers can now qualify for temporary early retirement, a benefit also known as the 15-year early retirement plan. In a directive signed by Army Secretary Eric Fanning, the Army in late June expanded its use of the Temporary Early Retirement Authority to allow for this additional group of soldiers to qualify. Col. Brian Pierce was honored for his more than three decades of Military service during his retirement ceremony held at Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh. Pierce joined the Army in the summer of 1987 and later joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1990. During the ceremony Pierce was presented with several plaques and awards recognizing him for his dedication to the state and his country, including the North Carolina Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit Award. The Army cannot do what the nation asks of it unless the active, National Guard and Reserve components operate effectively as a wholly integrated Total Force, Army Secretary Eric K. Fanning said at a recent breakfast forum hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army’s Institute of Land Warfare. In a discussion led by retired Army Gen. Carter F. Ham, now AUSA’s president and CEO, Fanning said he has found the Total Force concept “already pretty well solidified” out in the field, noting: “You can’t tell who’s active, Guard or Reserve unless you ask, in many cases.” Read More…

This year’s tournament honors SFC Russell Thorington’s retirement from the NCARNG. SFC Thorington has been a longtime supporter of the NCNGAEF and he is retiring in November 2016.
