Although they are geographically an ocean away from one other, military police from the U.S. Army National Guard, Slovenia and Albania found that they had much in common while conducting synchronized training during Immediate Response 16. “We’ve been able to work seamlessly and integrate in with the Slovenian Army,” Capt. Christopher Breyrle, company commander for the 220th Military Police Co., 89th Troop Command, 193rd MP Battalion, Colorado National Guard. “Our tactics and procedures are very similar.” Read More…

Future North Carolina National Guard retirees gathered to attend the inaugural final formation retirement seminar hosted at the 139th Regional Training Institute. The seminar educates retirees, who have 18 months or less before retiring, about critical resources available to them. This is also an opportunity for Guard members to show their appreciation and thanks for retirees’ years of service. Read More…

Demonstrators and police have hugged and shaken hands with members of the US National Guard during protests in Charlotte, North Carolina, while scenes of goodwill in the city have spread through social media. With the possibility of a government shutdown at the end of the week, the NGAUS legislative staff expects Congress to pass some sort of bill to keep the government running, but there are still discrepancies that need to be worked out in the Senate. The Senate was scheduled to hold a key procedural vote on a proposal introduced by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. That measure would fund the federal government through Dec. 9. The US Army is to soon retire its last Bell Helicopter OH-58 Kiowa Warrior armed aerial scout squadron, which under the Aviation Restructure Initiative are being replaced with a “heavier” organization based on the Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. Apaches are to team with unmanned aerial systems for the scout role and bring some significant new capabilities, but are also more complex aircraft and are much slower to deploy. Read More…

North Carolina National Guard Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 113th Field Artillery (113th FAR) and 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry (120th INF) joined their Moldovan peers for live fire training at Exercise Fire Shield at Bulboaca Training Area Moldova as part of Multinational Exercise Fire Shield 2016 hosted by the Republic of Moldova. The soldiers fired Moldovan issue artillery and assault rifles. While it is fun training for the NCNG soldiers, it has a very practical mission for the Moldovan instructors earning valuable practice instructing other nation’s soldiers on their weapons systems and tactics. “Veterans aren’t sure of how things work on the outside of the military,” said Jon Powers, U.S. Army veteran and co-founder of solar energy investment platform CleanCapital, in a phone interview. “Many corporations aren’t sure of how things work on the inside of the military.” As a result, many veterans find themselves mismatched or in jobs that don’t draw on the skills they acquired on active duty. That’s what Powers is trying to change, and he’s optimistic that the burgeoning clean energy industry he works in is a particularly good fit for veterans with engineering and tech backgrounds.
