Facing a public outcry, Defense Secretary Ash Carter ordered the Pentagon to suspend its effort to seek repayments of enlistment bonuses given to thousands of California National Guard members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Carter’s decision comes in the wake of angry reaction from congressional Republicans and Democrats who demanded he relieve the burden on Guard members following news reports that soldiers were being asked to repay debts that in some cases totaled more than $25,000. North Carolina National Guard pilots, with Detachment 1, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 151st Aviation Regiment, flew over flooded areas during the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew to aide in the rescue of victims in the eastern part of the state. The pilots partner with local volunteer firefighters, who are members of the North Carolina Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team, to assess flooded areas in Lakota LUH-72 helicopters armed with state-of-the-art camera equipment to spot victims. The North Carolina National Guard Association and the North Carolina National Guard are happy to announce the date for our next Tarheel Homecoming on 16 December 2016. We invite retirees and prior service National Guard members to attend and learn more about current guard operations and provide information on retiree benefits. In 1858, Theodore Roosevelt, who would become the 26th President of the United States, was born on this date in New York City. “T.R.,” as he became known, was one of the nation’s most notable presidents, advocating a larger military presence in world affairs and taking great interest in formulating progressive national policies at the turn of the 20th century. Roosevelt was appointed a second lieutenant in Company B, Eighth Regiment, New York National Guard in 1882. He would later describe his initial military experience as “invaluable.” Read More…

Self-driving convoys were born from a simple military calculus: the fewer people driving vehicles in convoys, the fewer people will die when those convoys get attacked. The Army is testing a “Leader Follower” system as part of its Advanced Warfighting Assessment exercise at Fort Bliss, Texas. Two humans take control of the main, lead vehicle. And then up to seven other following vehicles are driverless, with autonomous systems guiding them to follow the humans in the lead. Read More…

A lack of training time can be the biggest challenge faced by Army units shaking off the rust and returning to combined-arms operations, according to the chief of U.S. Army Forces Command. Soldiers now have less time in between deployments, which limits their training opportunities. While the goal is to give Soldiers twice as much dwell time so they can hone and develop new skills, the Army is seeing a ratio of around 1-to-1.3 in terms of Soldiers’ deployed time compared to their dwell time, Gen. For weeks, soldiers have been helping communities across North Carolina rebound after the front line hit the home front due to Hurricane Matthew. Some National Guard members were sent out in style after protecting citizens in Lenoir County. Grangier Stadium was packed with Kinston residents to watch the soldiers let loose playing baseball after two weeks of disaster relief efforts. Read More…
