The world is becoming ever more interconnected, and the U.S. military must be a global force to meet the challenges of an interconnected planet, the commander of U.S. Transportation Command told the Senate Armed Services Committee recently. Air Force Gen. Darren W. McDew told the senators that his command was “born global” and it is the glue that ties the military together, gets military forces where they must be and sustains them. Matias Ferreira recently joined more than 40 other military veterans in graduation and acceptance into the ranks of the Suffolk County Police Department in Long Island, New York. In fact, he was voted as the class president. Ferreira stood upright and proud as he accepted this responsibility — on two prosthetic legs. Ferreira lost both his legs below the knee after stepping on an improvised explosive device while serving with the Marines deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. Read More…

The North Carolina National Guard has recognized Durham County Deputy David Earp for his heroism while responding to an emergency call involving two children at risk of drowning on Sept. 20, 2015. Earp was one of five recipients of the North Carolina National Guard’s Soldier and Airman Medal. Service members are eligible for this honor if their act of bravery saves lives at risk of their own. In 1959, in Washington, D.C., former President Harry S Truman, who was a Guard captain commanding Battery D, 129th Field Artillery from Missouri during World War I, is the honored guest at the dedication of the new National Guard Association “Memorial” on Capital Hill. The Association, organized in 1879, is a private organization with membership restricted to National Guard officers (active and retired), and represents Guard political and financial interests to members of Congress on actions prohibited by federal law for the Guard Bureau to pursue.
