ANG’s Outstanding Senior NCO of the Year: Master Sgt. Ashley U.P. Able DVIDS
Master Sergeant Ashley U.P. Able was selected as the Air National Guard’s 2018 Outstanding Senior Non-commissioned Officer of the Year.
Able, an aeromedical evacuation technician with the 156th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, 145th Airlift Wing, North Carolina Air National Guard, stood out among her nationwide counterparts to be selected for the award. Her superior technical skills, passion for personal and professional development, acute problem-solving skills, and innovative mindset has set her apart among her peers.
“I do my job and that’s what I do,” Able stated matter-of-factly. “I am sure there are other Airmen who are more deserving than me. I’ve met some very impressive master sergeants and senior master sergeants and I would not have thought I would have gotten it over them.”
The professionalism and military bearing Able is known for have propelled her towards opportunities to have a lasting impact within her unit and for her wing. She is one of the four founding members of the up and coming NCANG Charlotte and Stanley County Top 3 Council. Able also sustained 3,000 hours while deployed in support of operations Freedom’s Sentinel and Inherent Resolve, providing 24/7 aeromedical evacuation operations over 4.6 million square miles.
Asheville military group wins environmental award ABC13
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A local military field shop was recognized Friday for helping keep the environment clean.
The North Carolina National Guard’s Field Maintenance Shop No. 1 on Minute Man Drive in Asheville was given the 2018 Secretary of the Army Environmental Award, which represents the highest honor in the field of environmental science and sustainability conferred by the Army.
According to a news release, FMS No. 1 supports seven locations in six counties and maintains more than 900 pieces of equipment that are integral to NCNG.
Officials said since the shop sits near the French Broad River, its staff has to be vigilant to prevent spills or groundwater contamination. The staff also has to comply with federal guidelines and must pass annual inspections by Buncombe County.
North Carolina Air Guard Sergeant Experiences British Culture DVIDS
08/05/2018 – CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Staff Sgt. Jason Chipley, 145th Logistics Readiness Squadron, spent two weeks with the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom as part of the Military Reserve Exchange Program (MREP). This trip allowed Staff Sgt. Chipley to share his experience with the Royal Air Force and experience their culture.
“It was a great honor to work with the Royal Air Force. MREP is meant to build relationships and to learn from one another and I was happy to be a part of that,” said Chipley.
MREP is an annual coordinated international exchange program with NATO militaries to help develop cultural understanding, regional expertise and language proficiency and interoperability. It provides National Guard and Reserve Participants training associated with mobilization duties while enhancing their ability to work and communicate with military individuals of the host nation.
“This was a great opportunity for Staff Sgt. Chipley and he represented the North Carolina Air National Guard well. He had the full support of the wing while he was there,” said 1st Lt. Jack Hogue, 145th Logistics Readiness Squadron, who is the Materials Management Officer in Charge.
The MREP program not only allows military members to learn and exchange ideas about their respective career fields, but it also provides the opportunity to be immersed in the host country’s culture.

August 9th — Today in Guard History National Guard
1945 – Nagaski, Japan – A single B-29 bomber named “Bock’s Car” dropped the second atomic bomb on Japan killing about 73,000 people, finally compelling the Japanese government to sue for peace. Its pilot, Major Charles W. Sweeney would in 1956, at age 37, become the youngest brigadier general in the entire peacetime Air Force when he was appointed by the governor of Massachusetts to command the 102nd Tactical Fighter Wing, Massachusetts Air National Guard.

The North Carolina National Guard Education Foundation is holding it’s 3rd Cruise for Charity! Royal Carribean will set sail on their Adventure Of the Seas cruise on January 19, from Ft. Lauderdale. Cabins start at $709, with a $250/person deposit. Some of the proceeds from each cabin will go to the NCNG Education Foundation.
