NCNG: Mentors turning negatives into positives at Tarheel ChalleNGe DVIDS

NEW LONDON, N.C. – Parents, mentors and family gathered at the Stanley County Agri-Civic Center in Albemarle, North Carolina to celebrate the graduates of class 51 during a ceremony marking the completion of the life-correcting Tarheel Challenge Academy.

TCA is designed to provide at-risk teens with a second chance to turn their lives around and is a quasi-military program that instills discipline, structure, and values similar to what soldiers experience during basic training.

“I feel extremely happy to be able to share this day with you graduating from the academy,” said Rep. Wayne Sasser, of N.C. House District 67. “I’ll be honest with you, I’m not sure if I could have went through what you have endured, learned, changed your ways and succeeded, but it paid off. Thanks for your perseverance, dedication and you need to take this day and enjoy it. Be happy as we all celebrate what you have accomplished.”

The TCA full-time staff, retired service members, commandant and director all contribute to the success of the program. Also heavily involved with the cadets’ resident course, are the mentors. In addition to providing guidance during the resident phase, mentors help graduates complete a year-long follow up to continue their education, start a full-time job or even join the military.

74 Years Later, North Carolina Marines Remember Iwo Jima Military.com

Mack Drake can remember a few life-or-death moments in his 93 years.

The first came when he was a kid, swimming across a Henderson County lake. He says he struggled to stay above water, but someone in a boat paddled by and offered him a ride.

Opportunity Unlimited puts you in control of your career.
Drake would have other life-or-death moments soon enough. At just 19, he’d be as far from childhood and North Carolina as imaginable. He’d be a U.S. Marine, fighting his way through the Pacific theater of World War II.

Drake and Joe Tedder share that distinction. Both men, who now call Gastonia home, even shared the same battlefield during the war.

They survived what Drake calls “a hellhole” — the Battle for Iwo Jima.

For more than a month, from Feb. 19 to March 26, 1944, U.S. Marines fought to take the tiny island from Japanese forces — an effort to stop enemy fighter planes taking off from Iwo Jima from intercepting American bombers.

Army captain Jacob Enke wins 6th annual All American Marathon Fayetteville Observer

Enke finished in 2:40.45. Maj. Sara Day was the top female marathon finisher for the second time.

Jacob Enke, the newest addition to the list of All American Marathon winners, put in miles and miles of training leading up to Sunday’s 6th annual race.

He still found the rolling course, which charts 26.2 miles from downtown Fayetteville to Fort Bragg’s Main Post Parade Field, a bit more of a challenge than he’d anticipated.

“This is a hilly course, isn’t it?” Enke said. “I wasn’t really ready for this. It’s difficult, so everyone out here finishing is doing a great job.”

Enke’s official time of 2:40.45, at a 6:09-per-mile pace, led a field of more than 700 marathon runners. All told, 3,815 participants ran across the marathon and its current sister race, the Mike to Mike Half Marathon and the All American 5k.

Racers faced near-ideal weather conditions, with start-time temps in the upper 30s, no wind and sunshine prevailing through wispy clouds.

Enke, a 30-year-old Army captain with 8th Psychological Operations Battalion, is a native of Ohio who ran cross country as a college student at Columbia University.

This was his fifth marathon and his first time running the All American, a race he wanted to tackle upon redeployment.

“I got back from deployment, and the timing was right, so it was like, let’s do this,” Enke said. “I’m really proud of all the service members out here, and it makes me really proud to serve for this country.”

Sara Day, a 39-year-old major with the North Carolina National Guard, was the top female finisher in the marathon. She was also the top woman in the 2017 race but missed last year’s race while away at school.
