North Carolina Air National Guardsmen Grab the Bull by the Horns DVIDS

The Air National Guard is always on the lookout for ways
to increase effectiveness for missions in an ever changing world. This past month for the North Carolina Air National Guard’s 263rd Combat Communications Squadron, this meant traveling to Robbins Air Force Base, Georgia, for the National Combat Communications Rodeo.

“The Combat Communications (CBC) Rodeo is an opportunity for CBC Units around the world to participate in key training followed by a practical exercise where the newly acquired training can be implemented,” said 2nd Lt. Dustin Absher, a Cyber Operations Officer with the 263rd CBCS. “This is the first time I will be leading a team on an exercise and this is a perfect
opportunity to dive into the essentials of Combat Communications.”

Featuring approximately 120 participants from across the Air Force, Combat Communications units help to build camaraderie with fellow combat communicators.

“It should definitely be an annual event with each unit sending as many personnel as funding will allow,” said Tech. Sgt. Robert Nicholson, a Guardsman with the 263rd Combat Communications Squadron. “Alongside the formal training provided by vendors and other SME’s, the rodeo allows an informal setting for the individual members of our units to meet and
make connections that are normally only made in deployed environments.”

Guard children get a chance to bond during ‘Sleeping with the Fishes’ event Army.mil

KURE BEACH, N.C. – Children of National Guard services members have a unique experience. They are not fully Army or Air Force brats as children of active duty service members call themselves, but they do have to deal with their parents being away for training one weekend a month, annual training in the summer, and other missions or deployments they are called to support.

A group of North Carolina National Guard children recently had an opportunity to spend time with kids just like them during the Sleeping With the Fishes event March 23, at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

The event was sponsored by Kids on Guard, a non-profit organization that supports the North Carolina National Guard Family Programs.

Twenty-six children spent the night in the aquarium next to one of the large tanks holding fish and small sharks. They learned about reptiles native to N.C. and had an opportunity to pet a yellow rat snake, a turtle, and a baby alligator.

Over 100 Vietnam Veterans Attended NCNG’S Vietnam War Era Veterans Day Event Caldwell Journal

RALEIGH, NC (April 1, 2019) — Hundreds of North Carolina citizens, civic leaders, and NC Guardsmen welcomed over 100 Vietnam Veterans to Joint Force Headquarters during a Vietnam Veterans Commemoration event, in Raleigh, April 1, 2019, as a part of the National Vietnam War Commemoration program.

The Key note speaker for the event was Medal of Honor recipient retired Col. Walter J. Marm who served in Vietnam with 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). In 1965, Marm took part in the Battle of Ia Drang and was later awarded the Medal of Honor his actions during the battle.

In 2002, the movie “We Were Soldiers”, starring Mel Gibson, told the story of Marm’s unit during the Battle of Ia Drang, the first major battle between the North Vietnamese Army and the United States military.

Marm spoke to over 400 attendees about his experience in Vietnam and how important days like today are to honor and thank fellow veterans who served during a difficult time in our nation’s history.

“I wear the Medal of Honor for all the men and women who served in Vietnam,” said Marm. “Most of all, for those who did not come home and those who are still unaccounted for.”

“We live in the greatest country in the world, because of our military, and I salute say thank you to all veterans and current serving Guardsmen, Reservists and active duty service members,” Marm said in closing.

NCNG Veterans Reconnect 15 Years After Start of Their Iraq Deployment DVIDS

When Sgt. Thomas Taylor’s daughter reached out to members of the 1450th Transportation Company, who he deployed with in 2004, they were surprised to hear he was terminally ill.

It had been almost 15 years since Taylor’s unit, part of the North Carolina National Guard, left the U.S. to spend more than a year driving up and down the roads in Iraq.

Alicia Rose, who was a Specialist when she deployed with the 1450th, said Taylor’s daughter reaching out prompted some of the former Soldiers to start a group chat and eventually a Facebook group for the veterans of the 2004 deployment.

“There has been several fellow unit members pass and there have been a major lapse in communication,” Rose said. “Sgt. Taylor had 12 fellow Soldiers come to his funeral on December 4, 2018. Most of us hadn’t seen each other since 2005.”

Around this time someone suggested a reunion because although they enjoyed seeing each other, they didn’t want the only time they got together to be at funerals.

On March 16, 2019, 26 Soldiers who deployed with the 1450th for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004, met at the American Legion Post 48 in Hickory, North Carolina for their first reunion.

“I was a little anxious coming because you didn’t know what to expect,” said former Sgt. Richard Cowles, “Then after I got here, you see people and it made me more at ease.”

Most of the Soldiers from the deployment have since left the North Carolina National Guard and social media had yet to connect everyone when they returned to the U.S, leaving most of them having little to no contact with the Soldiers they spent the hardest year of their lives with.

Impact of ‘ChalleNGe’ immeasurable Sampson Independent

Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy’s success can be measured in the thousands of diplomas handed out in the past quarter century, but the immeasurable impact made on young men and women serves as the positive butterfly effect for those well beyond its confines.

Whether dropouts or not progressing in traditional high school, many at-risk 16 to 18-year-olds have been afforded the opportunity at a second chance since the academy opened its doors in Sampson County 25 years ago — and uplifting stories abound.

The academy has turned out productive, civic-minded individuals who, during their tenure, have blended with Sampson’s communities, helping out at countless events and making their own positive mark. You can see the gray-clad cadets everywhere, assisting with service projects, cleaning up neighborhoods and helping however they are needed.

The academy has empowered these young people to embrace responsibility and positive behavior, to seek personal achievement and improvement. It has instilled self-confidence, cultivated ambition and brought about renewed determination in its pupils.

April 4th — Today in Guard History National Guard

1968 Various Cities, Nationwide – Upon learning of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis, TN, more than 125 African American communities in 14 states and Washington, DC erupted into mob violence and arson. Sporadic sniper fire in several cities caused Guardsmen to return fire, especially in Chicago and Kansas City, MO. Tear gas was used almost everywhere trouble broke out, with heavy usage in DC and Baltimore. Over the six days of rioting nearly 50,000 Guardsmen served on active state duty, the largest peacetime call up of its kind in history. Of this number about 5,000 were Air Guard personnel used to support operations by moving men and supplies to the troubled areas. No Guardsmen killed any civilian, though several suspected as snipers were wounded. And no Guard personnel were killed though a number were injured. Federal and state government officials praised the Guard for its “soldierly conduct, discipline, restraint, dignity, professionalism and humanity.”
