On May 17-19, 2019 the NCNGSOF will host approximately 30 surviving families of North Carolina Army and Air Guardsmen who lost their lives while members of the NCNG for a special weekend. How to Train Your Honor Guard DVIDS

As March sprung into April, a select group of Airmen from the North
Carolina Air National Guard transformed into the newest members of the 145th Airlift Wing’s Air Force Honor Guard; a group of military professionals that represent Airmen to the American public and the world, while maintaining a high standard, flawless image, and preserve the heritage of our nation’s military.

For two weeks, fourteen volunteers from around the 145th Airlift Wing trained with traveling instructors from the United States Air Force Honor Guard Training Flight based out of Washington D.C.

“It feels wonderful to see the amount of people that actually volunteered to be here,” said Senior Airman Portia Short, a Ceremonial Guardsman and training instructor with the United States Air Force Honor Guard Training Flight. “We taught them basic standing manuals for drill and ceremony, customs and courtesies, and it was like a condensed course for them.”

One of the most common functions of the Honor Guard is rendering the flag during military ceremonies such as high ranking retirements or promotions. They also possess a sacred mission of body bearing during joint service and state funerals, in which they transport the remains of deceased service
members, and senior or national leaders to their final resting places.

Teach Them How To Fish Citizen-Soldier

North Carolina Army National Guard cyber warriors traveled to Chisinau, Moldova, in July of 2018 to help members of the Moldovan National Army train in cyber defense operations.

“What we’re doing is teaching them how to fish,” said CW4 Donald Champion, senior information systems officer of the North Carolina Army National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ) as he described the goals of the joint-training initiative.

The nation of Moldova has had more than its share of cyberattacks. With Russia—a country notorious for its use of aggressive cyber warfare—as its neighbor, the tiny nation is under constant threat of attack.

“Just looking at their position, with them being near Russia, they are right in the heart of a large, large cyber threat,” CW4 Champion explained. “So, they are mostly concerned with the government-side threats, but then the business [threats] as well.”

The young nation of Moldova, with a gross domestic product of only $8 billion and a total population of only 3.5 million people, has limited resources to address the problem. Enter the North Carolina Army National Guard. North Carolina is State partners with the nation of Moldova through the National Guard’s State Partnership Program (SPP). The two groups have been partners since 1996, just five years after the country became an independent republic following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The North Carolina National Guard has been running this current series of cyber training for the last three years. The July 2018 training was the fourth in a series of trips undertaken by North Carolina Soldiers to help their Eastern European partner stand up a capable cyber defense force.

April 11th — Today in Guard History National Guard

1942 Sterparone Airfield, Italy – Flight crews of the 840th Bombardment Squadron begin their first combat missions flying B-17 Flying Fortress bombers in support of the Allied armies fighting in Europe. This squadron, formerly the 128th Observation Squadron, Georgia National Guard, was activated in May 1941 and spent two years flying antisubmarine patrols along the U.S. Gulf Coast before being re-equipped and retrained on B-17’s. Once it enters combat the squadron, assigned to the 483rd Bombardment Group, bombs targets such as oil refineries, marshalling yards, airfields, bridges, gun emplacements and troop concentrations. During its time in combat it flew missions over Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Rumania, Yugoslavia and Greece. In all the squadron earned 12 campaign streamers and two Distinguished (today known as Presidential) Unit Citations. Today the lineage of the 128th/840th is carried by Georgia’s 128th Air Control Squadron, flying Boeing E-8C Joint Stars aircraft as part of a “Blended Wing” of Air Guard and active Air Force allowing the Air Force to monitor ground operations and direct air strike missions in support of the Army.
