More than 150 National Guard troops activated for coronavirus response in four states Stars and Stripes

To combat the spread of coronavirus in hard-hit states, about 160 National Guard troops have been activated to do tasks such as cleaning public spaces, coordinating logistics and supporting state emergency centers, according to information from the National Guard Bureau in Washington.

The governors of more than a dozen states have declared emergencies, which gives them the option to activate their National Guard under “state active duty,” which is sourced and paid for by that state. So far, Florida, New York, Rhode Island and Iowa have utilized this option, according to the bureau.

“As other states stand up or right-size their support to requests from civil authorities those numbers can change rapidly,” said Master Sgt. Michael Houk, National Guard Bureau spokesman.

30th Division Awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for Actions in WWII Whitehouse.gov

Statement from the President

At my direction, the United States Army will award the Presidential Unit Citation to the 30th Infantry Division. More than 75 years ago, Soldiers of the 30th Infantry Division slept in their foxholes after hastily taking defensive positions around the small town of Mortain, France. They woke to find themselves under attack by an entire German Panzer Corps. Through this assault, Adolf Hitler gambled to keep American forces from breaking out of the Normandy beachhead and into the open countryside. The Nazi plan required the Panzer forces to cut through the 30th Infantry Division en route to the sea. However, the actions of the 30th Infantry Division would prove to be decisive in blunting this attack.

March 19th — Today in Guard History National Guard

1945
Wattweiler, Germany – Colorado’s 157th Infantry, an element of the 45th Infantry Division (AZ, CO, NM, OK), seizes this town after breaching the Nazi defense barrier known as the “Siegfried Line.” The 45th Division entered combat in July 1943 when it took part in the invasion of Sicily. It later made assault landings at Salerno and Anzio in Italy and on the Rivera in Southern France. By war’s end it captured Nuremberg, the symbolic home of the Nazi movement, and Munich where Adolf Hitler got his start leading the Nazi Party.
