The Tarheel Minuteman Foundation is holding the annual Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on April 24, 2023! This event will take place at the beautiful Lakes Course at Carolina Trace Country Club. All proceeds will assist in providing scholarships to members of the North Carolina National Guard and their families.

The EANGUS Scholarship Program offers the award of many full-tuition scholarships provided by our partner institutions, as well as our $2,000 CSM Virgil Williams Scholarships and $1,000 Patriot Scholarships funded by corporate and individual donations.

Our scholarship program is one of the primary benefits we offer to our members and their dependents. Each year, we award multiple scholarships with a total value of over $500,000.

The deadline to apply for most EANGUS scholarships is 1 APRIL 2023. Please refer to the EANGUS Scholarship page for specific scholarship details and application deadlines for each institution and scholarship we offer.

Workshop Offers a Legislative Learning Experience
NGAUS hosted legislative liaisons and state association leaders this week for an event aimed at strengthening the National Guard’s voice nationwide.

The association’s 2023 Legislative Workshop occurred Monday and Tuesday at the National Guard Memorial Museum, NGAUS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

GUARD RECRUITING The Army and the Air National Guard’s recruiting posted significant gains in the first quarter of fiscal 2023, according to Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson, the National Guard Bureau chief. Speaking with reporters at a Jan. 24 Pentagon press conference, Hokanson said the first quarter of fiscal 2023 occurred between last October and December. Hokanson said Air Guard accessions increased by 10% during the same window last year, while Army Guard enlistments were also up 43%.

CHINESE SURVEILLANCE BALLOON Two F-15C Eagles from the Massachusetts Air National Guard’s 104th Fighter Wing helped down a high-altitude Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina Saturday, according to a wing spokesman. The balloon was first detected Jan. 31 over Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. The Pentagon said an F-22 Raptor with the 1st Fighter Wing from Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, downed the balloon with an AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missile. The balloon fell 6 nautical miles off the East Coast into 47 feet of water. Navy ships in the area helped recover the balloon.

SAMOA JOINS SPP The Independent State of Samoa, an island nation in the South Pacific, will partner with Nevada in the National Guard’s State Partnership Program, according to a Nevada Guard press release. The Nevada Guard is familiar with the South Pacific due to its partnerships with the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Fiji. Samoa is the 100th nation to enter the SPP, a global program which started in Eastern Europe in 1993.

CHEAP REAPERS General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has offered to provide two MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial systems to Ukraine for $1, according to a company statement. The offer is subject to U.S. government approval and would include a ground control station. General Atomics would also train the remote pilots and maintenance personnel at no charge, but Ukraine would be responsible for the remaining costs. Transporting the attack aircraft would cost about $10 million, while the operating and maintenance costs would be about $8 million annually.

SEA CARGO PLANE The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Defense Department’s “mad science” division, selected two companies last week to design an experimental seaplane that can transport large amounts of cargo, according to the agency. General Atomics and Aurora Flight Sciences will develop separate designs for the mobility seaplane program, which DARPA has dubbed the Liberty Lifter. The aircraft is intended for operations in a maritime environment such as the Indo-Pacific region.

KC-Z TANKER The Air Force is soliciting industry feedback on “innovative” technologies and capabilities for its planned future tanker, with the goal of the aircraft entering service by 2040. On Jan. 31, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center issued a request for information on the Next Generation Air-refueling System project, or the KC-Z. The AFLCMC explained that the new tanker is the “third of three increments to the Air Force tanker recapitalization plan, following increment 1 (represented by the KC-46 program) and increment 2 (known as KC-Y or ‘bridge tanker’).” The center’s RFI about the KC-Z is available at sam.gov/opp/b4a602a266e4450f861242c45e71fb07/view.

HOUSE BUSINESS The House Armed Services Committee starts work this week with two full committee hearings. Today, the full committee will receive testimony from non-governmental experts on “The Pressing Threat of the Chinese Communist Party to U.S. National Defense.” On Wednesday, the full committee will receive testimony from non-governmental witnesses on the “State of the Defense Industrial Base.” More information about the HASC is available at armedservices.house.gov.

SUPER BOWL TICKETS Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons teamed up with USAA to give Super Bowl LVII tickets to Sgt. 1st Class Mark Watson of the Texas Army National Guard. Watson served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1987 and has served in the Guard since 2007. Super Bowl LVII is scheduled for this Sunday in Glendale, Arizona and features a contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

February 16th — Today in Guard History National Guard 

1862
Fort Donelson, Tennessee – Swiftly moving his army after its capture of Fort Henry on February 6th, Union commander and Illinois Brigadier General Ulysses Grant invested this fort on the 11th. It capitulates today. When the Confederate commander asked what terms he could get if he surrendered, Grant’s reply was the now famous “unconditional surrender” which was quickly attached by the press to his initials “U.S.” Grant. He would end the war commanding all union forces and in 1868 was elected the 18th president of the United States.
