The new commander of the North Carolina National Guard’s largest military unit wants the world to know that Old Hickory is standing by. Col. Robert H. Bumgardner, who took the reins of the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team during a Fort Bragg ceremony recently, said the unit will be needed by its state and country in the future.  Read More…

National Guard Bureau officials say they notified congressional staffers six years ago about reenlistment bonuses mistakenly paid to troops, pushing back on criticism from Congress after a recent report revealed aggressive efforts to recoup the money a decade later. Officials told The Hill they sent emails to professional staff members of the House and Senate Armed Services committees in October 2010. The emails notified them that the Guard was cooperating with a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into fraudulent activity by California National Guard incentives manager Master Sgt. A Senate bill favored by NGAUS and other organizations that support military members and veterans would provide greater job protection for reserve-component members. The USERRA Improvement Act introduced by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, in late September, would strengthen the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Act, which allows members of the National Guard and Reserve to serve in uniform with minimal impact on their civilian careers. The city of Concord will hold a ceremony on Veterans Day morning to honor those who wore our nation’s uniform, and to celebrate the return of a 1907 German field gun to Downtown Concord. The field gun, or cannon, was a fixture in Downtown Concord from approximately 1919 until the 1980s. Read More…

The North Carolina National Guard Association and the North Carolina National Guard are happy to announce the date for our next Tarheel Homecoming on 16 December 2016. We invite retirees and prior service National Guard members to attend and learn more about current guard operations and provide information on retiree benefits. We will also be celebrating the National Guard’s 380th birthday celebration during the event. The event will be hosted at Joint Force Headquarters at 1636 Gold Star Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607. In 1994 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 4th Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division is activated. This unit, better known in the Guard community as the “Sinai Battalion” is composed of 401 Guard volunteers drawn from 24 states plus a few Army Reserve and active duty soldiers. Its mission was to deploy to the border between Israel and Egypt in the Sinai Desert as a peace keeping force as authorized by the 1978 Peace Accords ending the war between the two nations.
